Shadow Troopers

By Makwiesel, in Star Wars: Legion

So I am TERRIBLE at painting the white for Stormtroopers- tried it to death on my Imperial Assault minis and just never liked the results, SO I decided that as iconic as the white Stormies are, I just can't pull it off and to be honest the other dudes at the shop are going to do that and do it well anyway, so I am not going to go that route.

I pulled out my 6 inch Black Series Shadow Squadron (Stormtrooper and Biker Scout/ Speeder Bike) and looked at them to inspire a paint scheme that would work on the Legion scale and not just be spray paint black and go. I modded a squad and did the first draft, which I will include here when I take some pics later.

I intend to make them my Post Republic occupation of Utapau Shadow Troopers- some former clone troops and some Chiss conscripts- not that you can tell with the helmets on.

Is anyone else doing alt-coloration of their Imperials?

All my Imperial Armada ships are either Black/Red/Silver or Black/Blue/silver depending on if they are assault ships or support ships respectively.

I intend to do this with my stormtroopers.

Although as I was glueing them on the stands I was thinking how awesome slate grey and dark blue would look, might save that for snowtroopers.

Primer White, paint black areas and weapon, and done.

here a good guide.

If doing all black Stormtroopers, remember to find some way to differentiate from the likely inevitable Death Troopers release. Two different units in all black armour with essentially just a headswap will be hard to tell apart at tabletop distances.

And I'm thinking a bone color for my armour.

Mobow213 ...

I hear you and I have watched it- repeatedly. Mine just don't come out like that. Maybe my brushes aren't good enough, but I am fairly certain it's allll me. Gotta know our own abilities, right?

Caimheul1313...

Absolutely this drove me away from green goggles in my first planning, and eventually lead me to dark grey with black details and lighter grey detailing too- I don't want these to be Death Trooper knock-offs! I was also thinking of a bone color but since I KNOW I will absolutely get a ton of Shore Troopers if they make them, I chose to leave that to them... for now....

I plan on painting up a unit of shadow troopers as well. In the end, storm troopers and shadow troopers have identical armor. Using a gloss finish will make them pop.

In regards to the inevitable death troopers, the two units are vastly different beyond "black". Death troopers have a slim tactical armor, and a helmet that is way more angular than a traditional stormy bucket. Not to mention 3 sources of neon green light on the helm. There are silver accents throughout the armor. And the tactical elements are all in a flat black leather which is in stark contrast to the shiny armor plates. With 5 extra minutes of care in the paint process, you can make these two units stand out from across a table even placed next to each other.

You could always go the nova trooper look instead, with the yellow/gold trims if you wanted them to stand apart from the deathies........

I've been trying to restrain myself from going the shock trooper route (if that counts,) but it's gonna be an uphill battle. ;)

Why restrain yourself, Jabbawookie? If that's what razzes you, go for it!

Seconding @Makwiesel here. My other consideration was to do my Stormtroopers up in a mottled camo., because wearing all white in a non-snow environment is asking to be shot. Great for intimidation, not so much for survival. Only way it could be worse is if they had literal targets on their helmets and chests. At the very least they should have broken up their outline! :P

Maybe try painting them red? I ended up doing mine the traditional white-and-black, but I am tempted to do my next set of troopers (maybe the snowtroopers?) in Coruscant Guards style:

Absolutely. Maybe if their armor was wicked awesome and could stop something like maybe a holdout blaster shot, then white it up and bring it on- but considering they go down in a faint breeze, some concealment is in order for the actual combat guys... let the crowd-patrolling intimidation squads wear the all white deathmask costume...

If you are fine with that i highly recommend, paint one, record yourself, then get some feedback, sounds like you're doing a mistake that is easy to correct.

Privateer press has a great color called "Cryx bane base" that is a dark grey with a tough of green and blue in it...a good menacing color for Storm troopers and that way you can still do black once the Deathtroopers hot the shelves.

As far as I could see, GCW troopers are white, I assume as intimidation, so mine will be white as I am not afraid a few rebels when they come out of hiding

I’m playing rebels but if I did play empire I would totally do a legends dark trooper mk 1 grey variant.
