Unguided rockets

By Slade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I haven't played with Unguided Rockets before and am considering using it for a 'fly casual' league coming months so would like to double check before commiting.

From various sources I understood Unguided Rockets die rolls cannot be modified (i.e. only by spending a focus token), neither can any die be re-rolled after a shot with Unguided Rockets. Therefore Target Locks and Card Actions such as Rage are out of the question.

Info I could gather was always around other questions on the rockets hence the check. Thx.

The card is very clear. No modifications to the attack dice except spending a focus token for its default effect.

Modifications being defined as:

- adding results after rolling. Adding dice before rolling is not a mod.

- changing results

- refilling dice

What is it you're unsure about?

Crackshot works well with UR, or anything else that negatively mods the opponents defense dice.

Also they rank among the most disappointing upgrades for X-Wing ever. Such a cool concept, giving the ships that can take them an entirely new way to play...and then they are so clunky and overly restrictive that you needn't have bothered.

In hindsight I guess they should have just given a reload upgrade to bombers and punishers. But a 3 dice range 1-3 secondary weapon for 2 pts is a great deal, even if you only get to mod it with focus.

It would be, but on the ships that can take it that just isn't good enough. Such a wasted opportunity to revisit those ships!

No, because you absolutly need a Focus to shoot. If the Focus was not an obligation, it would be good, but as it is now, with Hot Shot Copilot everywhere and stress build, well, it is not really good...

Funny how Deadeye RHO and Harpoons in general are considered dangerous with all that stress and hot cop

There is huge difference between a fully modified Harpoon and having half modified 3 dices attack...

If you compare the two, there is no use to even discuss the subject...

Deadeye Rhos can just go old school and grab a target lock. An unguided rocket carrier is just screwed.

No TL with stress, Poe and Countermeasures hate on TLs.

Here's the thing: Deadeye Rhos are a little better (but not that much better) than UGR Punishers or Bombers when facing adverse condition. Potential TL backup (since most lists don't have both anti-focus and anti-TL tech), a clearer dial, SLAM, better statline. It's not much, but it's a hair better I figure on a point-for-point basis.

However, in the best case, a Deadeye Rho is shooting a 4-dice attack with Focus and Guidance Chips, and will put the Harpooned! condition on the target for a potential extra damage. Best-case for a UGR Punisher/Bomber is 3 dice with focus and no GC. Even if there isn't a huge difference against Hotshot and Stress, that's not in all lists, and the much higher upside of a Deadeye Rho in matchups which aren't particularly unfavorable is going to be enough to keep a high winrate in general.
