Temporary Mounting, for future painting

By Icelom, in Star Wars: Legion

How should I be mounting the minis to the bases before I have gotten a chance to point them? If I use my model glue I am worried I won't be able to get them off when I do want to paint them. (don't want to get paint on the bases)

I am brand new to games requiring painting and assembling, I am enjoying the painting more then I thought I would but I don't think there is any way I can get everything painting to satisfaction before actually playing the game.

I also noticed a lot of threads of people playing the game right on release day, I for one was overwhelmed with the assembly and mounting (coming from 2 pre-painted games before legion) and just felt like I was not ready to play, things like the speeder bikes require gluing and again I had no idea how to effectively mount the minis to the bases.

Thanks for any help.

Additional question,

How are people handling the multiple weapons for the walkers? they won't stay in with a press fit, and I would like to be able to swap the weapon based on loadout to have it look correct. Was thinking some kind of sticky putty or something but not sure if that would really be strong enough.

Thanks,

I would not worry about getting paint on the base, you can always repaint it afterwards. But I you do, try putty or 2-sided mounting tape.

If you want to swap weapons, the best way is to magnetize them. It's not difficult, you can find tutorials on youtube.

Thanks,

For the chin twin Blaster cannon i glued it in, with my at-st the side weapons like the grenade launcher and twin light blaster cannon are really snug fits for me. Some blue tac will easily hold it in place if you need something to grip. On the speeder bikes make sure the peg fits in the model and glue it on the base and hold it there then remove the model from the peg once you are happy with how it is facing on the base. It seems like the pegs only go in certain ways. Its a bit of finger gymnastics to do this but its one of the best ways i know to make sure its done right.

As for the mortar launcher i saw a post talking about how the back piece can be pried off, i glued a small magnet inside of it and glued another onto the mortar for full interchangeability.

Since your new to painting and assembling here are some useful info that helped me.
1.) don't judge your paint job by close up, judge it by arms' legnth. You see a lot less mess ups that way.

2.) Don't worry if the mini isn't finished or even based, if you want to play go for it and play. Even having some basic primer and base coat is fine and you can see your progress on each game.

3.) if your worried about getting paint on the bases, prime them off the base, then mount them and surround their feet with painter tape or another kind of cover for it.

4.) use a wash then go back over the flat areas that you don't want to be washed with the base color. Its pretty much cheating at looking good.

I am going to put everything on my AT-ST but magnatise my AT-RTs.

Glue the model to the base, youll have little trouble painting it like that and since you will likely do the base last, it wont matter if you get paint on it while painting the model.

What you might wanna leave off is the arms of the models so you can easily paint the bodies, if you glue the arms in place they will interfere and make it difficult to reach certain areas.

Make sure to glue plastic to plastic, painted plastic will break easily when glued and then you’ll have paint chip to deal with. If you want to prime/paint them off the stands cover the bottom of their feet with masking tape or sticky tac(the second one is better).
