^THIS. If this was Wild West the Miniatures Game, it's like we've gotten 14 waves of better gunslingers, more guns, and cooler cowboy hats, but the OK Corral is still 6 fence posts in a sand lot.

The devs need to skip the ship mechanics for awhile and enhance the battlefield and the objectives of the game.

Miranda adds nothing of value to the game.

There’s always a bigger fish.

When Sozin says something, I pay attention.

The competitive scene is off the rails right now, and the driver is asleep at the wheel. I have been on this game for every wave, playtested the first six waves, and led the drive to collect data since 2014 via ListJuggler, and I have never seen it like this before. We are in Crazytown.

EDIT: I disagree with the above point. The approach to the game and is it is played is not the problem. The problem is a small collectIon of terribly designed cards:, TLT, Sabine, Traj Sim, Miranda, R2-D2, Bomblet, Ghost Title, Autothrusters, VI, Reinforce, ships with more than six upgrade slots.

Just to reiterate my point, my problem with the final, and the reason I want a nerf, is that both players said it wasn't any fun. Every single facet of Miranda is pure NPE, same with Nym, same with the Ghost.

Bonus points if you can guess what they all have in common.

Rebel scum all of them.

Is, uh, the answer TLT?

I recently ran the numbers on TLT usage on all "ships in lists that made the cut" in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. You can find it here.

For those who just want the punchline:

  • 2014: 0% (no TLT)
  • 2015: 37% (143 out of 379 samples)
  • 2016: 71% (747 out of 1056 samples)
  • 2017: 71% (978 out of 1368 samples)
  • 2018: 81% (415 out of 510 samples)

Lies, **** lies, statistics? How about this, the number of ship bases that fit into the range 1 band, range 2 band, range 3 band, range 1-2 turret band, and range 2-3 turret band (from this excellent thread , thxkrayts):

Range 1 Band: 29.63 Ship Bases
Range 2 Band: 68.91 Ship Bases
Range 3 Band: 108.17 Ship Bases
Range 1-2 Turret: 98.5 ship bases
Range 2-3 Turret: 177.08 ship bases

So. Goddamn. Good.

EDIT: Back in 2015 X-Wing Designer Frank Brooks was asked what is his rule of thumb for when an upgrade card is "too good". He used autothrusters as his example, pretending to be a player, said: "Well, I have a small ship with boost, miiiiight as well take autothrusters..."

Miranda, meet TLT. I haven't run the numbers, but I can confidently bet that > 90% of all Mirandas taken in LJ-reported tournaments have TLT stapled to her, and 99% of the ones that made the cut have TLT.

“It wasn’t any fun”

*shows up to tournament with list they won’t have fun with*

what did they expect?

and honestly whoever had iniative gave up the game here.

oh well, at least we’ll get some memes from it. (And 10000 more Dva quote threads)./s

This is exactly what I see too. Rebels synergy is utterly running rampant. What were the other 3/16?

I mean really, how do you expect FFG to make it better when 2 of the exact same ships with the exact same builds are equal? It exactly what y'all claim to want, right?? A perfectly balanced game.

This situation does not automatically occur with most other identical ship faceoffs. In other matchups the player who dials in the best move, who gets arc and denies arc to their opponent, who manages their focus/TLs the best, heck the player who sets up and gets lucky on one good shot. Even when it's another regen ship like Poe vs Poe there will be a winner and skill will matter (it will likely not be the guy with initiative but he could possibly out fly his opponent).

But here we have a turret that can shoot every single round so arc is simply not relevant. Those turrets have a max of 2 damage a turn and we have have a ship with a defensive mechanic that makes it likely to dodge one of those damage and guaranteed to regen the other. There was skill in getting to the top table, there was skill in getting the game down to those 2 ships. But once the game reached that point... it was just a matter of dice a whoooole lot of dice over an extreme period of time. Not because the two ships were identical, but because that ship is broken

TLT has been skimmed over the last two major rounds of nerfs cause other stuff was more pressing but it seems pretty unlikely given the data that it's not hit the next time round. Only questions will be how, what else gets hit (please reinforce and AEO effects) and whether its before Worlds or after.

C'mon Blair. You know it will be right before Worlds.

I hope you are right. I've heard rumors from non-playtesters that after the FAQ leak the playtesters have been effectively cut out of the testing equation, and further that their opinions were largely being ignored even prior to that. My guess is that playtesting is in freefall right now and FFG management be like https://i.imgur.com/qBrg9yX.mp4

you are all right...

until the game gets a patch/fix we should adapt, like we’ve done few times before.

Ion has been my counter to OP small base ships, It’s crazy cheap with Scum:

Sunny Bounder (14)
Ion Cannon (3)
"Heavy Scyk" Interceptor (Cannon) (2)

I've seen this picture a few times today and I didn't fully understand it til now. At first I thought it was just a back in 15 minutes sign and the game had to be paused for some reason and they were just letting people know the players were coming back, and the timer on the game was paused or something. Is it actually that the players were so bored they were letting the clock run out for 15 minutes so they could play less of the game?

They went off to play Loopin Chewie til the clock ran out.

Yes.

Because there was no point in continuing to play since they effectively did no damage, ever, to each other and the only possibility for higher damage was one of them being exceedingly stupid and eating a bomblet. At the final table, that's called very unlikely (especially with SLAM).

What if they had fun except for that specific mirror match? I know I’ve played games with the same list and had a blast, but then another game been miserable. I was miserable day 1 of that System Open but Thursday’s Hyperspace and then even Saturday’s Hyperspace I was having a ball.

(Was flying a take on Kylo + 2x Rho gunboats).

Well it will either be:

1. A week before worlds taking effect at worlds

OR

2. More likely given time to worlds, it’ll be months and months later, but only after some unreleased NPE is provided first that’s worse.

You got a 9 hp ship with 1 green die. What the problem is? Never met a Miranda I couldn't pop. =P

I am 2 months into X-Wing. I did play around 30 games (some of them up to 3.5 hours in length), went berzerk and bought all Scum & Villainy plus a few empire and rebel ships.

I have won 2 of those games, lost everything else. I am still having a blast, experimenting with funny combinations.

Unlike any game, this is actually the first time I have lost so many games, and not felt the need to rage/being salty.

I really enjoy this game, although I’ve only played casually, but seriously, reading so much salt from alot of you guys, I am wondering why you play this game if you don’t enjoy it? It is absolutely the most fun game I have played, and I simply keep experimenting :) A completely new experience every time. So you lost? Aaaaaaand?

Make your builds to counter your nemesis, and don’t just copy it. So many upgrades to pick from.

9hp ship with 1 green die, ok.
Now add 3PO, Lothwrick with Draw their fire (no way to let that harpoon condition trigger), and Fenn Rau. Then regen while fleeing, covering yourself with your TLT (and covering TLT blind spot with bomblets). Yeah, piece of cake.

This must be why Miranda never loses ever ever ever ever.

Never said it was unbeatable. But a tough combo, yeah. The kind that narrows a meta drastically.

I even recall some blogger (which articles I used to like quite well) doing two articles to explain himself about quitting jousting lists for tough turret carriers (like Miranda)... No need to give you a link, I suppose.
