I was considering keeping the base edges unpainted too, cause the movement tools are going to be rubbing up on them. I don't want to keep repainting the base rims which will see a lot of handling, particularly the notch in the vehicles bases.

Paint the model then put them on the base for a very clean look.

I like to glue plastic to plastic. masking the edges is no big deal. I'll be putting sand on top with some tuft.
