Im absolutely amazed how restrictive 800 pts is

By VAYASAN, in Star Wars: Legion

Ok liek many ive rushed in and bought 1 of everything, dont regret if for a second but ive come to realise, im never going to get some of the models on the field..and thats with the game at its else stage before other things come out.

With vader and the ATST, theres room for hardly anything else, no way can I also utilise the extra Storm trooper box and the extra Speeder bikes (awesome models).

Think I have seen this posted before too. Im not complaining, just an observation.

General Veers/ Leia will really open this up when they get here. They just had to make Luke/Vader appropriately awesome.

Because they will be lower point cost but still have awesome abilities, or something else?

Lower points.

Vader (probably rightly so) is an expensive beast....and the ATST just had to be in the game...but for a skirmish game its also a huge expensive beast. The two together = lots of points.

I haven't gotten to play with either yet very deeply, but while very effective they aren't quite the damage power-houses as Luke or Vader, nor are their special abilities quite as potent as far as killing other units. Their special actions make them more effective at supporting say, a couple of trooper units around you while you move in force, while from my experience vader with Force Reflexes and Saber Throw basically needs no escort.

My group had already decided that we will be playing at 1000 once we get a handle on the rules and what not. 800 just doesn’t feel like enough.

You also have to gave at least 3 corps units (troopers) in your list as well.

It really is not that bad. I don't know why people think it is so terrible. So you can't run every single unit type in a single force. Big deal. If you were able to then building a list really would not be very interesting now would it? If you choose to have a Vader led army, expect it to be very Vader centric. Dude is a powerhouse.

the game just started and lots of people are not happy ...... go play another one then. have fun.

actually Vader (fully fleshed) + AT ST (basic) + 2x Speeder bikes + 3x Troopers (with no upgrades) is 800 pts. AND not so inefective....

Of course with Veers as general there will be more room. But would you give up Vader's commanding presence of "-" for the poor "2" of Veers?

Think about it...

I expressly said I was not complaining. Its just an observation.

I think it will be better when there are more units out for the game. Luke and Vader cost alot because they have force powers, IMO. Other leaders won't cost as much bringing more points to work with. Plus there should be a better range of other units, too.

And who knows, maybe they will do like in armada, increase the points for tournament use, when more waves are out.

Armada went from 3-400p and something similar could happen here.

I 100% do not recommend this . For a Rebel player, 1000 pts is basically the maximum possible number of everything but the Snowspeeder. That'll just result in a bunch of very similar lists.

You should feel like you have to make meaningful choices in list building. Play with in the 800pt range for a while before determining that it's not enough.

Armada had announced before it released that they would be increasing the points of Standard play.

But we havent had any official play notification yet, so still who knows, but I am fine either way.

We have had Official Play articles of a similar vein to the one that increased the standard play of Armada though, and unlike with Armada's big ships, Legion arguably released with its biggest ticket units: Vader, the AT-ST, Luke, and the T-47 Airspeeder.

I'm fine either way as well, I just would be surprised if it changed in the OP documents for the above reason.

In the rule book there is a 1600 point limit game/force chart.

We are only at Wave I. I do not agree with some of the complaints. 800 is plenty for the units we have now. This will change as we see more units. Also, there is a time vs army size vs cost issue to consider. To me 800pts is the correct balance.

For those who want a larger battle there are already rules on page 47 for a 1600 point battle that includes different force composition and deployment rules.

Quote

GRAND ARMY
Players who wish to play a larger game may construct grand
armies instead of standard armies. A grand army follows all the
standard rules for army construction, but its total point value
is 1,600 instead of 800 and it may include additional units.
Additionally, battles between grand armies are conducted on
a 4' x 6' battlefield. During step 5 of setup, do not draw any
deployment cards, and during step 6 each player has only one
opportunity to eliminate a card. Finally, during step 8, each
player should deploy their units within range 2 of a 4’ edge of
the battlefield, opposite their opponent.

RANKS
Each grand army must include the following:

  • Commander: One to three commander units.
  • Corps: Five to ten corps units.
  • Special Forces: Up to five special forces units.
  • Support: Up to five support units.
  • Heavy: Up to three heavy units.

800pts is kinda alien to ffg players, 500pts is the highest official points limit that we've ever played (armada/rwm for example).

However this game is valued out similarly to 40k where most things are expensive so you can have tons of little cheap gears and super expensive gears to kit them out with. Vader is like 250pts or so depending on gear, and he actually feels like a proper beast. Imagine if we get a transport of some sort to get him to the front faster lol.

Cant he twirl his saber over his head like a helicopter?

im guessig a bunch of your groups players have bought 2 at-st without adding up the points.

Vader does not need to be your commander and you can add more units with that 250pts. That is valid strategy to attempt a game with.

Oh yeah, in fact my friend stated that once Veers comes out he probably wont use vader purely for the points difference.

i'm not sure how cheap veers or leia is but theyre bound to be muuuuuch cheaper than the powerhouses that is Luke/Vader.

800pts is more then enough for now i dont want games to take 5 hours i'd rather play 3 shorter games then one huge game
