Adepticon Thursday Thread!

By geek19, in Star Wars: Armada

So it's not a Regionals, but it's still pretty well attended. As of right NOW, we've got me, @Snipafist , @GiledPallaeon , and @comatose up here in Schaumburg playing in the Thursday tournament. I'm trying to get the lists after it's all over, and we'll see what ends up happening with.... Alla this.

Stop by and say hi to us all if you're here!

Ugh, i should have gone to Adepticon.

Does FFG have a booth?

Wanted to make it out there. I might still go out either Saturday or Sunday though.

I'll be there for the Armada tournament on Saturday!

I took second place, best Imperial (...runner-up, basically, Nick Griffith* [spelling?] took first I believe and he was running Imperials, but he won best overall and so best Imperial-specific went to me). @comatose took best Rebel, I'd guess around 3rd or 4th with a very interesting Raddus fleet and @GiledPallaeon should be right around there too, doing very well for himself with a double Kuat fleet with the same number of tournament points as me but not quite as high a margin of victory. @geek19 has the fleet lists and I'm sure he'll get the data posted eventually. Not sure it's right to really go into detail about anything just yet as some folks may be planning to bring the same fleets back to the Saturday tournament.

I'll say this much, though: I'm pretty confident I was the only player out of the 16 people (edited to correct number) without a large ship in his fleet. On a related note, Interdictors are legit now and mine got some work done.

*He of Gencon 2nd place double ISD fame but whose forum handle I don't recall. Nice guy, too. Gave me an 8-3 slapping around round 2 but I did very well in rounds 1 and 3 so I clawed my way back to second.

They have a tournament on Saturday that's full up with a waiting list, starts at 10AM. Not great prospects for the tournament itself, but quite a good chance of there being a pool of players looking for pickup games that weren't able to get into the tournament proper.

I finally got to play @geek19 , meeting for a Raddus fight in round two of a field with 16 players and 12 Imperials. Since the Raddus drop can’t go first, first player Raddus can be a bad day as geek19 witnessed when his MC75 died early in the second turn of its life on the table. The Home One/QTC/IF! combo did quite well with Hammerheads hitting well above their cost. It was almost enough to win the whole thing, but Home One went down to two front arc and one side arc shots from an ISD2 of 2017’s Gen Con winner. The ISD2 was killed, too, but attrition from squad attacks cost me two too many Hammrheads to hang onto 1st place.

I think I held onto 2nd place overall despite losing in the third round. Nick had 16 points coming in to play against me at 18. With a 7-4 over me, he nudged me by 1. @geek19 got all the scores. I’m enjoying taking lists that shouldn’t work and making top few players: two Pelta lists in regionals or [redacted] shenanigans like today’s Rebel list. Looking forward to Saturday so I can maybe get a game against @Snipafist or @GiledPallaeon .

I asked the FFG guy (sorry, his name escapes me) what overall I got just out of curiosity and he told me 2nd, which surprised me given the drubbing I got from Nick round 2, but in the grand scheme of things it sounds like the gap between me, you, and @GiledPallaeon was pretty narrow. Lots of us in that 22 point bracket fighting it out by margin of victory, which is in the grand scheme of things a tie ;) . I got a 505 to 95ish 10-1 blowout in my final game and that helped substantially when it came to my margin of victory. My opponent (whose name escapes me right now, sorry I'm mentally trashed) was a really nice guy but his dice were cold, mine were hot when they needed to be, he made a few mistakes, and by the end I was sniping his rear arcs to harvest Superior Positions points and tabled him. He took it really well, which is a credit to him. It's tough to not go on tilt when that kind of thing happens.

My humble Gozantis were all-stars throughout the day. Nick killed his poor doomed Quasar with Jerry's ability to deny the chihuahua swarm the meal they worked so hard for after it got boxed in and was double-arced all over and a very similar thing happened to my 3rd-round opponent's Quasar too.

Nick's Quasar was brutal on my squads, not sure what your squadron composition was like but that Ruthless Strategist+Kallus Quasar-II with a lot of high-hull aces just mulched them up.

Oh and on a side note, Miniduels has a vendor booth at Adepticon and they're selling their Armada trays (amongst many other products). Nick G and @geek19 each picked up one and they're the bee's knees. They're a bit cheaper online I believe but the ones on sale at Adepticon are already put together, which for me was a process that took about 2 hours of sanding and dusting and applying wood glue, so it's worth the extra cost to avoid the hassle.

::sigh::

Maybe one year...

I have the scores, and @GiledPallaeon has the MOVs for them all. Probably post it all up Sunday in all honesty, as Im testing a list tonight for tomorrow's game.

It's Griffiths. You were close! It was a blast playing with you guys this weekend! I really appreciated the tips and recommendations you guys had about my list going into world's soon.

Also that gozanti thug swarm @Snipafist was too hilarious. I will be telling that story for quite some time.

Yeah, it was good seeing you too! Please come on out and visit us at Fair Game when/if you get a chance!

And the Gozanti swarm was pretty funny there. The Quasar may have won the squadron mini-game (and you won the real game, haha) but it wandered into the wrong part of town! Those Gozanti blue dice are one of those things where if I could drop its anti-ship dice and save 5 points on it like a GR-75 I would probably do so in a heartbeat, but there are circumstances where they get some serious ship-to-ship work done unexpectedly!

Oof, my list was the Garm Fleet with the copper participation medal. Glad to make it out and play against quality players! Many lessons were learned and happy to make it out to Chicago! I must have done the math wrong on squads cause my list came out at 398 points, my mistake!

Ha, no worries, man. Glad you had fun, and hope to see you next year!
