Tell me about hanging out at FFG HQ

By PaulTiberius, in X-Wing

I will have my first opportunity to fly into Minneapolis next week (big job interview actually), and may have a couple hours to kill in the evening.

I was wondering about dropping by FFG HQ, see if any Xwing is going on, see if I could pick up a casual game.

What hours is the place usually open, where people are actually playing?

What's the likelihood of getting to put together a list out of someone's stuff when you're traveling with none of your own?

Even if I couldn't get a game in, is it worth it just to stop by and bask in the glory?

I've popped in a couple times when on a trip for work.

It's a really neat store.

You probably won't get a pick up game in but if you're in the area with some time to kill it's worth going in.

There is a large Twin Cities community that plays @ FFG on a regular basis, you should check out that location for sure, but scheduled games happen every day of the week at different game stores around town. If you post something to the FB group on specific times you will most likely get someone willing to play, or someone can point you to the game happening that day!

What evening/s will you be there?

Steal some TIE Reapers for me.

Or just the preview article.

And to answer some of your questions...

FFG EC is open from 9AM to Midnight and the most common nights to play are Wednesday (usually open play) and Saturday (there's a "Late Night" Saturday tourney every week).

The chance of someone bringing all of their stuff is slim. Most of us bring a list or two at most. Best option here is to follow the link that Cubs gave and try to communicate with someone prior to your visit. For example, if it's a night/time I'm there, I could put together a list you wanted to play.

And grab me a #5/33 TFA damage card. Then fly to CT and give it to me. :D Thanks.

Wednesday evening is your best shot at a pick up game at ffg. Or post up in Twin Cities X-Wing group, listed above.

Is FFG headquarters a “magical” place? Like Tahiti? Or Disney World?

Very magical. At the nexus of two ley lines, in fact, one for St. Paul and one for Minneapolis.

That's why there is no XWM news. Folks there are used to keeping a secret.

Lastly, I'm partial to Fiji. They have nice bottled water. Volleyballs named Wilson. And I've been there.

To get the security codes, you’ll have to make an otherwise pointless trip to Las Vegas to find the Master Codebreaker. Only he can gain access.

So Wednesday night is a usual thing?

I'm flying in Tuesday night, with a little time to kill unless I find I'm way too keyed up about the next day. Doing my interviews with a potential employer Wednesday morning. Leaving Wednesday afternoon. It's funny, if I absolutely had to, I could probably get them to shift everything a half day so I'm there Wednesday night, free of obligations...

I better just focus on getting the job. Haha.

X-Wing does find a way of creeping into our priorities. I'd just suggest just swinging by the FFG EC to check it out then. Wednesday nights are the most regular X-wing night there besides Saturday night, but I'm not sure how many will be there anyway as it can be hit or miss as usually people do set up games the day of (or at least take roll on Facebook of who will be there).

1. FFG HQ is across the parking lot from the Event Center, and sadly, you don't really get to just go 'check out' the offices :) The EC is just a nice FLGS, with a very nice tournament space attached. Also a decent cafe.

2. As folks mentioned above, for pick-up games, Wednesday nights are the usual evening.

3. That said, if you are eager for a game on the 27th, and you are willing to put up with an opponent who has a coat of rust to shake off (gotta get back into the swing of things for Worlds!), I can bring some stuff down for a game at around 6 local, or maybe earlier, depending on work that day.

I tried to, but I ended up freeing ponies.

Yeah, but did you find some bum who just happened to be a great codebreaker himself?

Probably one of the ponies that he freed.

You know too much! You’re too dangerous to be left out telling folks about my city’s little secret...

HQ is a pretty fun place to hang out. If you manage to get there on a Friday night, I could be content to just wander around and see what people are playing for half an hour before I felt I needed to go pick out a game to play. I haven't played X-Wing there yet, but it's on my list of things to do when I go up to visit the Twin Cities for longer than a day or two. Would highly recommend.

Dammit, I laughed.
