None-roll damage from hero ...

By edcy, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

There is a none-roll combo to kill monster....

Astarra uses feat to move a doomed monster from a space adjacent Marhsal with vigilant watch(exhausted) and shadow tome(exhausted) into another space adjacent that marshal, and then she uses vortex to move again like above,

This monster will suffer...

per space ( 1 (vigilant watch) + 1(doom) +2 (shadow tome) + 1 (doom )) = 5 dmg / per space moved

and vortex cause 2 dmg + 1(doom) = 3dmg , total is 18 dmg !

Is this correct ? It's a crazy combo without roll ...(don't worry about X ...)

Even the monster is without doom , this combo still cause 11 dmg, it almost can kill most of monsters in a large area

I'm pretty certain that even with doom, it would only count once per entered space- different causes, but same instance of suffering damage.

The trigger condition of Vigilant watch is when the monster move out a space adjacent marshal within 2 spaces. So, Can it trigger doom indepently?

I'm not certain that you can leave one space without entering another. That being said, the set of abilities and equipment in combination is pretty lethal, you're right.

Seems legit to me. It also makes sense to me that Doom would trigger for Shadow Tome damage and Vigilant Watch damage separately.

The whole thing requires a lot of setup though.

- Monster advanced into a space adjacent to the Marshal
- Marshal had 1 stamina available and triggers the 2XP skill Vigilant Watch
- Marshal has the Act 2 Shadow Tome shop item
- Marshal has 1 health available to exhaust Shadow Tome
- Conjurer Astarra is within 3 of the monster
- Image Token is within 3 of the monster
- Astarra has 2 stamina available and the 3XP Vortex skill
- Astarra has her heroic feat available and uses it
- Monster is already pre-Doomed

If all that was done, kudos to the heroes! They deserve that once-per-encounter roll-less monster devastation. A similar combo can be done with a Geomancer and Gravity Spike, although the setup is even trickier in that case.

The Overlord should be able to see this move coming from a mile away and chose to advanced the Doomed (or easily Doomable) monster up to a Vigilant Watch Marshal. Its up to him to avoid having his lieutenant or other valuable monster grinded up by this. The heroes also gave up a lot of XP to create this combo - creating other vulnerabilities.

thanks to @any2cards for making this easy to follow along!

In fact , the hardest part of this combo is shadow tome. And we just used vortex , vigilant watch and shadow tome can cause a 5x5 area clear with 8 stable dmg , it is really power and low cost. Astarra with elven boots can move very long distance or just make a rest to prepare the next combo. Other things just was showed how power .

Astarra conjurer and marshal are also both power class and heroes separately, I think this can make the overlord to get hot potato :D

Astarra is ridiculously strong no matter what she is doing. The more I play Descent, the more I feel she is flat out the best hero in the entire game. Perhaps Elder Mok is a close second.

I agree with Charmy.

My top heroes per archetype are:

Mage: Astarra
Scout: Logan
Healer: Elder Mok
Warrior: several candidates depending on the class.

I really like Astarra. She's as fast as most scouts with her ability, has a high willpower unlike most mages, and has decent health. Her feat is very useful. Her as conjurer is solidly my favorite hero to play. I'm not convinced she's THE BEST , but she's real close.

What really makes it silly is that she has such an over-the-top hero ability, but doesn't pay for it in any way. On the contrary, her stats are actually boosted! 10 Health on a Mage, 5 stamina, no speed penalty (4), and what I consider an ideal Mage attribute distribution. Just enough Knowledge to fully utilize Rune Plate, and Willpower is (imo) the most important general purpose attribute to have - protecting her from Dark Charm, Uncontrolled Power, Howls and the like.

You look at her, and then you look at.. say.. Master Thorn and... something is not right in the balancing department.

I'm curious who you think is in contention with her for "greatest hero of Terrinoth"! Maybe you've figured out something we've missed!

I think it's in the different definitions of "best."

Logan, for example, is an untrappable menace.

Lindel is a wonderful all-around tester with good stats to boot, and a great feat.

Mok is a recovery maniac.

Trenloe adds 1 to all his attack and defense results, how cool is that?

I'm not sure who I'd call the best.
