nice!!

Has anyone tried to build one of these out of foam core or cardboard? I'm thinking about trying it at some point but wondered if anyone has actually done it.

There are many 3D printed versions of this. I know, I know, you don’t have a 3D printer. What are you even doing with your life? Get one. Today.

I would use a lot of plasticard, not much foam, if I was gonna scratch build one of these. But this is the kind of project that would be much better done as 3D printing. The detail work would be a real hassle to do this by hand. I like scratch building a lot, but for Star Wars I find it's best to build Tatooine buildings, Hoth generators, natural terrain features, etc. and buy other stuff.

Sure.

You paying for it?

I built one completely out of cardboard. It was 9x9 at the base 7x7 at the top. The panels were 2 3/4 inches tall. It was assembled upside down to be able to hot glue together. I cut the vertical pattern in the panels and the detail of the door with an exacto and glued them to the frame. Each piece was painted first with an enamel to prevent warping and then painted in a dark gray. It actually came out quite nice and was built in about an hour or so.

I ended up giving it away because I actually built it to see if it could be done very cheaply and quickly. I actually had no intention of building an Endor table. I am currently working on a Death Star/Star Destroyer interior table that is going to be totally modular so that it doesn't get old. I am also going to be working on a Carbon Freezing Chamber/Bespin table. (Both inspired by EA's Star Wars Battlefront from 2015.)

Mine was $165, I just had to assemble it from a kit. They’re not expensive at all. I’m assuming if someone has enough cash to play just about any miniatures game that they have some disposable income.

My printer had a bad case of heatcreep so its clogged in the metal pipe that normally goes into the heatsink above the nozzle.

Yet to figure out a way to unclog the dang thing.....

I've bought several 3d printed terrain doodads from a few different parties on the Internet, and I have yet to see a printed [anything] that didn't need way way too much work to "anti-alias" (if you will) the surface. Those little step lines are a no-go for me. So I'm still scratch building the old fashioned way. You can keep your 3d printers.

If they're printed at a high resolution, they really should not be visible except up close...that said, I presume if you're that detail-oriented, you're painting your terrain. Priming them with a spray gesso will flatten it out easily.
