Unusual hobby help, painting pvc?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Any of y'all ried painting on pvc?

I know it' not a normal hobby material but I have a task that requires some sculpting and painting on pvc pipe fittings.

Any chance anyone has tried? I'm hoping that roughing up the surface will let me prime and paint like normal miniatures.

Never did it but Google says to scuff it with some 220 grit sandpaper, wipe it down with acetone (use gloves) and spray it with some paint designed to stick to plastics.

Yeah I saw that too. I' going to start with that then krylon fusion then try and prime paint over that

Yup, I've done it previous.y Scuff it down to give it some tooth, then a normal plastic primer and you should be fine.

I'd scuff it to remove the gloss but use an automotive primer rather than a primer for miniatures or models. Primers for automotive applications are usually hotter with a solvent that will etch the pvc giving it a better bond. The better your primer sticks the better chance your top coat sticks.

Now for the caveats. If your application requires the use of pressure, NFPA only recommends water based paints and primers. Solvent based primers can reduce the pressure rating of pvc pipe and fittings.

The second caveat depends on the temperature during the application. If the temperature is very warm, the primer will dry very fast leaving fuzzies on the surface which will require a light sanding. If too cold, the primer will take longer to dry and develop an eggshell finish that may be too smooth and require a light scuff.

With all solvent based paints, a well ventilated area is a must. I also recommend a dust mask at the very least.

@Velvetelvis I'm going to be nosy here: What's the project? Building terrain for SW Legion? or a space station for XWM perhaps?

I am using fiber optics to give a sepulchre guard shadespire squad actually glowing eyes.

I intended to make a ring of pvc pipe to lift the base up a tad to make room for the circuit.

Now I realise I'm not in a rush, so I'll take my time and find a better 'ring to use.

Finished up the glowing eyes project.

Let's see if I can make this on topic for the x wing stuff..

Uh..you could put the circuit in a ship or probably fit it in a small base with some finagling. Run the fibers up and out an engine or whatever.

Hard to get a good picture of the effect but the light from the fiber optic isn't actually that obnoxious.

Very cool!
