I have never really settled on anything and always just held the base with fingers directly but so many people I see on videos always have something that they fix a model to (with what looks like blue tac or something)
Any input?

Sometimes I get a hand cramp holding the base. So I rotate methods with blue tack on a spray can lid and/or holding base. Some guys like to keep base clean until flocking. Guess it depends per mini and size
Poster putty to the top of a prescription bottle is what I do. And if I need to, I can remove the top of the bottle and hold the cap in my hands for a little bit more manipulation. It has been my preferred method for the past couple of years.
the new GW painting handle is $8 and worth every penny.

I use stick tac (poster puddy) to afix the model to the base (for the troopers). Then I stick tac the bases to the lids of discarded protien shakes (costco premier pro protein shakes i think). They are remarkably good for not handling the figure.
Depending on what the model or piece is I would mount it to paint pot tops, pencils, pens, basically use stic tac to mount pieces to anything so I dont handle the paint before it's cured.
Poster putty to a piece of 1"x 4" dowel.
My hand.
Although I did recently purchased the citadel tool and these will be the first minis I paint using it.
I use 20 oz coke bottle caps.
