And ... What will you paint first?

By Dash Two, in Star Wars: Legion

My excitement level is, well, waiting an hour for the store to open to make sure I was in on the first demos last weekend. Like, breakfast tacos in hand just waiting for the doors to open. This stems from someone with zero patience so having watched and waited for this to FINALLY get here I am ready to go. With that ...

Sorting out what gets painted first?

I have it narrowed down to a single Rebel squad and or one of the AT-RT

Took Friday off and, if possible, "disappearing" Thursday around 3 pm. As in ... just not readily available for all things work. The local store has the first formal "game night" on Thursday. Thus, I get ALL day Friday and, then, Saturday and Sunday.

Would think I can knock out a group of 7 or an AT-RT, as I am new and slow

Just curious

I'm planning on starting with a squad of Rebels, just to finally nail down exactly how I want to use the colors I have in mind. The vehicles are pretty much sorted in my head so should be fairly easy to take care of.

One of the vehicles, for my entry to the painting competition. I tend to do a better job painting vehicles than infantry since I hate doing eyes.

Stormtroopers first...while I decide what colours I will do my rebels.

Stormtroopers. Easier to batch paint.

Stormtroopers, three units worth of them. Easiest to paint and they will look awesome in groups waiting to dry. Then a t47 or two. Not sure what colors I want to paint them yet, though.

I painted stormies first. I kinda want to do the speeder bikes.

Out of loyalty and in an effort to support local I ended up buying ALL of my gear from my store. Taking it you get yours early.

So jealous

I knew you were from Austin as soon as I read breakfast tacos!

Ill start with the speeder bikes, then go to the stormtroopers.

Ready to play this weekend at Dlair!

Yeah unfortunately I have no LGS to support so I'll also have to travel to play.

Stormtrooper tk421

I'm buying 2 core sets, and my painting is... well, to say "rusty" would not be enough, I haven't painted a single mini since I started playing X-wing 5 years ago. So I'm going to start with Luke, since I'll be having two of them, and I can use one for exercise purposes :D

28 Storm Troopers, But now I am wondering if I should do a few in a desert camo style.

In my many years of painting up armies for Warhammer fantasy and 40k, I have always found that painting the troops up first is the way to go. That way getting the most numerous of models painted first, so the rest of the models feel like a treat and not a chore. I will be starting with my rebel troopers then move on to stormtroopers.

I am going to be very tempted to rush through and get everything painted ASAP. I will have to remind myself that painting minis is one of the main reasons I decided to buy into Legion--why get it over with so quickly? Also, the faster I go the more mistakes and imperfections I'll be staring at for the rest of this game's life.

That said, I'll start with the rebel troops.

No rush from me either.

you have these figures a long time, why rush to have them done a week earlier(or whatever). In the scope of things, its surely better to have better quality miniatures and that will come about if you dont rush...whatever your painting standard.

Yeah, that's why I am not thrilled with the idea of a painting competition a mere 3 days after the games release, especially when people are heavily incentivized to spend those days playing instead of painting. I'm just fortunate to have Friday afternoon off, otherwise I don't think there is any way I could get anything painted in time (not good enough for a competition anyway).

That said, I'll be doing up my AT-ST for the painting competition, probably won't touch anything else until after the weekend. After that probably stormtroopers. Possibly speeder bikes, but I'll probably hold off on those to have something to look forward to after finishing the troopers.

Q: What will you paint first?

A: My miniatures.

Actually I am going to paint the Stormtroopers but I will be doing a squad of Shadowtroopers just like I did for Imperial Assault. I am working on an interior table first. Star Destroyer/Death Star table. That will more suited for the Fleet Troopers. I am also building a Tattooine table but a Beggars Canyon/Jundland Wastes type table littered with downed vehicles (Revell and Bandai 1:48 models) so my troopers will be based on EA's Star Wars Battlefront from 2015. I really want to build a table based on Galaxies Edge being constructed at Disney Parks. Something very outside the box.

I've been going crazy the last week to finish off my terrain before Thursday.

Once I get my mini's, I'll be starting with stormtroopers, mostly since I already have what I need for them. I'm still working on getting some of the paints I need for the rebels. The primer I got for them ended up being horrible; I'm glad I tested it on some scatter terrain first.

I ordered all of my stuff online and and aside from feeling super guilty have no idea when it might arrive. So I'll probably try to swing by my local FLGS and pick up some Stormtroopers on Thursday. I have a wedding to attend this weekend so will I be able to paint them? Probably not, but I am excited about assembling and priming, which I can squeeze in.

Vader

I'm gonna crank out an assembly line for my stormies while I get all the paint for my rebels together. Thank you Sorastro.

One of my friends, a recovering Imperial Guard player, asked if he could do the atst. I'm hoping he'll want to do the airspeeder too.

For laucnh weekend I'll do a squad of stormtroopers and vader.

If I have time I'll do Luke and a squad of rebel troopers.

From a motivational point of view, paint what you want to paint last and what you don't want to paint first. Otherwise you get really nice pieces and then many unpainted chumps because the repetitive painting gets boring.

For runewars I personally do a few units of chumps and then an interesting piece. That way you reward yourself for getting through chumps by painting an interesting piece.

For instance here is my Legion to do list (painting 1 unit at a time):

Rebel Troops

AT-RT

Troops

AT-RT

Troops

Luke

Airspeeder

Stormtroopers

Bikes

Stormtroopers

Bikes

At-St

Vader

Using this method i am rewarding my self for painting chumps by doing a more interesting model next.

@jgibbs2 Pretty sure you were there last Sat? Guessing on the name from the local FB group. I will be there Thursday night and, then, Saturday for all the painting stuff.

@shivore I understand the deadlined is rushed. Given it is a build & paint event, my guess is FFG is directing this at my peer group ... BRAND NEW gamers. Get us to come into a store. Show us a few tricks. Ease us into the experience. Full immersion into gaming.

Flip side is a master guru mini painting maestro could knock out something solid in a day. I talk a big game with full knowledge my perfectionism will keep me from getting 7 Rebels done in a weekend. Maybe, base coated. If I use oils on the AT-RT, then it will not be done either, as those need several days to dry.

I am pumped for the rules sheet you get.
