Just curious if the characters created for Imperial Assault, and the missions, are considered canon in the Star Wars universe? Will we ever see characters like Vinto and Blaise make an appearance in a comic, or maybe have their name dropped in a cartoon or movie? Just curious...
Either way, I wish we had some sort of background story on our heros.

The phrase I tend to use is "canon friendly". For the most part, there's no reason to think that these missions did not occur, but I think they're a far cry away from actually having taken place.
The heroes, for instance, tend to be based on a mixture of Star Wars and tabletop gaming archetypes. We have the Jedi, the wise old support specialist, the standard tanky soldier, the "healer", etc.
To be honest, I'm not sure how much Imperial Assault is even on the radar of someone like Kathleen Kennedy.

Well, it doesn't need to be on Kennedy's radar with regards to canon, but rather on the radar of Lucasfilm's storygroup (Hidalgo and Co.).

Right, "someone like Kennedy". The decision makers, Hidalgo, Filnoi, etc. Keepers of the Holocron.
It would be cool to see one of our characters come to life (IA would make a great TV series) but I just don't see it happening any time soon. Much as we love it, we're a board game. That's a niche, though definitely growing, community.

It'd be easy enough to do for most characters. They're all basically a mix of Star Wars and RPG archetypes, anyway. I just think there'd be almost no payoff for almost all fans outside of our happy family here.
I'd love to see Onar on screen, though.

A hulking, angry Aqualish would be a departure from the normal alien fare, I'll grant you. I wouldn't mind it.
To my knowledge: only Fenn Signis and Gideon Argus have character write ups from the Fantasy Flight staff though the information provided is minimal.
Many folks in the forums have made character backstories to make up for the missing info.
@Stompburger or even myself have thrown our hats into making the IA universe feel a little more "real/lived in".

They are not canon. But they're still approved by the LFL licensing department like all FFG products.
Think of it like The Freemaker Adventures; It's not canon, but it has to follow the rules of being canon (to an extent) regardless. So they're not oficially canon, but they could be. But they're not really lol.

Return to Hoth spoiler
The first mission of the campaign takes place during the battle of Hoth. I think, that is the closest we have from canon. Once the mission is completed it also makes reference to the capture of Han Solo in Bespin, clearly setting the first mission during the opening scene of episode V. Now I doubt that by playing as Gideon during that mission automatically introduce Gideon as a canon character, but I think it was a nice touch by FFG to allow our heroes to be part of the ground battle during Hoth evacuation.

There's definitely little allusions to canon here and there. The first campaign takes place right after the destruction of the first Death Star, for instance.
Even with the Battle of Hoth, though, it's implied that you're not necessarily in the middle of the fight on screen, but possibly on some other front. Thus why there's all the portable shield generators, the Imperial Tank, the appearance of Dengar, and no AT-ATs influencing the mission's outcome.
Side note: I've said this before, but this is why I don't think a campaign set on a planet like Endor or Scarif would work. The conflicts aren't prolonged enough.
From the Wookiepedia entry on what constitutes canon :
"The following material, although released after April 25, 2014, is not considered canon:
Fantasy Flight Games's RPG supplements contain elements of both Canon and Legends topics"
If the RPG stories aren't "full" canon the way Rebels is, the IA stories probably aren't either. My guess is that the stories and characters that are in all FFG materials are technically considered canon, but more "sub-canon" in practice. LFL is probably free to reference FFG events or people as they see fit, but no one writing the comics, TV shows, books, movies, or video games is bound by anything FFG produces, and there is no outcome of any of the campaigns that is recognized as "canon" by anyone at LFL until they decide to recognize it.

The slightly longer answer is Obviously No, and its unlikely that anyone with the creative powers in relevant positions can implement anything IA into canon sources.

Slightly off topic, but X wing has the imperial raider designed specifically for FFG that made it into Playstations Battlefront 2, and the speculation that the remains in the desert on Force Awakens is the imperial raider... So never say never!

Yes it was a really cool example of them taking a design they liked and bringing it into the game (which is on more platforms than just Playstation).
At the time of creation it wasn't canon, but as soon as it got pulled into the Battlefront campaign it was.
People writing new Star Wars stories could pull stuff from anywhere, so if someone pulled an element from IA into a canon story, that would become canon, but the rest of IA would still not be.
That'd be awesome though. I wish these original IA characters got their own comic or something.

Technically.
I'd think of it like this: there are two canons, Legends and the current canon. Plus, all the elseworld stuff that doesn't really fit into either, but still technically falls in Legends.
But under current canon, there are "ranks". Movies being the highest rank, probably followed by TV shows, then stuff like comics and books. It's all canon, but if there's a contradiction (like Poe meeting Rey in the TFA book) you defer to the higher rank.
Heck, I guess you could even consider Imperial Assault to be the lowest form of canon, if you wanted. As long as nothing contradicts a higher level, it may as well have happened.
Regarding the Raider... interesting. As far as I can tell, it looks like it really was a unique design specifically for X-Wing Miniatures that was later adapted into the Thrawn book, and eventually SWBF2.

If you're ever curious if something is canon or not just look it up on wookieepedia. There is a label on articles that says Legends or Canon. This can be trusted with like 90% accuracy.
From what I understand the TIE Defender plays a bit of a featured role in Rebels, and that was a ship designed for the old 90's TIE Fighter game just so that you'd have something strong to upgrade to. Goes to show that you just never know what they're going to pull in!
