What's with all the love for Sentry in a 3 spec build? As a single spec --- pretty nice. But if you already have lightsaber on your skill list (e.g. from Niman), its just more Parry and Reflect with an FR boost. The Sentry talents are kind of meh.

Primarily Improved reflect + force rating, i'd wager other options for improved reflect are soresu defender and shine expert and neither give you a bump to force rating, also constant vigilance, a whole bunch of uncanny reactions and sleight of mind, dodge is nice, a cheap toughened and 2 cheap grit, 2 cheap reflect. And impossible fall is almost essential in a galaxy without handrails and nearly omnipresent bottomless pits :P

Basically this, you can crank up Willpower for an always good Initiative roll, Throw a Saber a long way and are more than just a Saber user. Arbiter is a close second for me but they don’t often fit together. Honestly the more books that come out the less and less I like the 6 traditional forms. For low xp games the breadth of capabilities of Arbiter, Armour, Sentry and to a lesser extent Executioner, is really appealing and FR2 is actually useful.

I'm almost there with you, the more books that come out the less I like 5 of the 6 traditional forms. Niman disciple is still just as awesome in my eyes. The only stuff in it i consider a waste are center of being and improved center of being. If i could replace them with sleight of mind or uncanny reactions or uncanny senses id do it in a heart beat and those aren't even awesome talents, force of will or mind over matter are cool talents that synergize extremely well with niman-disciple. I'm playing a Niman-disciple martial artist and I've avoided mind over matter because I'm angling for ascetic, and with 5 grit and iron soul make mind over matter kind of pointless especially when my strain threshold is already 16.

I've been running a Makashi/Arbiter/Gadgeteer for a bit now, and I kind of love it, but do really feel restricted in some ways by having dipped out of FaD trees. I was originally going to take Warden instead, but a combination of our GM trying to literally kill us at every opportunity, and some thematic character reasons necessitated the left half of the Gadgeteer tree.

Warden is still looking tempting though. My character leans heavily into the social stuff, so the Makashi/Arbiter combo actually really works for me, but man am I missing that force rating, and some talents.

I do love Niman Disciple. And get the benefits of adding Sentry.

But does Padawan Survivor work with these two as a third spec?

Yes, padawan survivor is useful to any Jedi spec, it is the best spec for tricking out a lightsaber crustal. But Ataru striker gets the biggest benefit from padawan survivor because as @Absol197 figured out temple training doesn't say to one hit of an attack, it just says attack, so every hit in an attack and linked due to saberswarm gets crazy.

For me it's the Armourer - Soresu Defender - Artisan.

I love playing defensive powerhouses with all the gadgets they can get their hands on.

A very close second is the Pathfinder - Hermit - Hunter for the "beastmaster" wilderness type.

Armourer, Soresu and Artisan are my choices as well. I love being able to build things in game and Soresu Technique melds nicely with crafting so that I can still contribute in combat.

Personally, I still love my first character I made for Star Wars RPG, now in its 3rd conversion from previous versions.

Luxius Rathe: former ISB trainee who washed out in the final days of training, who escaped to the outer rim to use his new skills to create a new identity for himself and earn a living as a bounty hunter. During his adventures as a bounty hunter he came across a Holocron that he unknowingly activated, learning he had abilities with the force. Now, he uses his force abilities to assist with the capture of bounties. He has his own transport and surrounds himself with his droid "friends" rather than be around people.

To answer the question though, I like him having Shadow, Artisan, Shien Expert

He also has Recruit and will expand into Investigator and Niman Disciple.

This is about as close as I can get to how he has always been. He purposely doesn't have a high force rating (2) because his training is dependent on a holocron whose gatekeeper is trying to bend him to the dark side.

Shadow/Shien/Racer

Alright, so it is all under the same umbrella. But, there are reasons aside from saving exp to do this.

1) these three give you quite a bit of versatility. You get a good skill spread.

2) talents compliment each other very nicely. Freerunning is especially nice.

3) these three specs turn you into one helluva lightsaber assassin.

It isn't the best combo, it is a bit strain heavy. But, it is good for what it gives you and it allows you the chance to do most things very well.
