Making Spiderman

By KungFuFerret, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So, I thought for a long time about making some homebrewed spec tree to reflect spiderman's abilities, but then I decided, "meh, forget that noise" and just decided to work with what's already available, and I found the perfect combination!!

Martial Artist + Politico.

MA for obvious reasons, it gives you lots of ways to defend yourself based on coordination, and also improve your offense with coordination as well, which was always the "gymnastics" skill in my head. Plus, it gives you the Precision Strike talent line, which lets you inflict Crits of your choice, allowing you to take down enemies quickly, and with minimal effort.

Politico, is for the Scathing Tirade line, especially Supreme, allowing you to taunt your opponents as a maneuver, which still allows you to beat them up as well. And it's pretty thematically fitting too. Spidey very often will just bounce around, avoiding his opponents attacks, making them more ticked off with each failed attempt. This is the strain loss from the ST checks, slowly working them into a mindless frenzy. And then Spidey will either sucker punch them into unconsciousness, or with enemies like the Rhino, let them knock themselves out with a well timed dodge into a wall.

So yeah, forget building a "Batman" talent tree, this is Spidey and I don't even have to do any work! *dusts hands off and sits back triumphantly* :D

Throw in Force-Sensitive Exile, then grab Enhance and Sense for super-jumping, enhanced physical prowess, and spidey-senses, and you're all good!

Exile also gives you the two Defense talents, Intense Focus, Convincing Demeanor ("No, Aunt May, I'm not Spider-Man!"), and two Street Smarts to show his experience being a super hero. And of course the Uncanny Reactions and Senses are good for Spidey Senses, as well :) .

True, dabbling in some of the reactive style force powers would help give him the super human build. :D

I've made Nightmare from Soul Calibur as an Aggressor/Marauder wielding the Czerhander Vibro-greatsword. And King II from Tekken as a MA/Commando.

The right side of Racer could also work:

  • Conditioned x2
  • Shortcut x2
  • Freerunning
  • Improved Freerunning
  • Better Luck Next Time

(The last one has a great superhero vibe, to me).

Yeah, for a Daredevil/Flash kind of concept, all about speed, I could see that.

Sadly I never really played those fighting games so I can't comment on those builds :D

Haven't played........

You’ve gotta give him a miniaturized Stohkli Spray Stick as well :) and turn it into a hands-free weapon.

You can make the web shooters using the weapon creation rules. "Ensnare"

I suppose the "miniaturization" would be more in the narrative, since I don't believe there's actually a way to do that in the game rules—take a weapon and make it way smaller.

I'm not sure I would go with Politico here. You might look at what you would get if you replaced it with Performer. You lose Scathing Tirade but you get Distracting Behavior (which seems like a thematically better match) and you also get Dodge, Coordination Dodge, and Natural Athlete (all very appropriate). Even Biggest Fan seems thematically reasonable.

Martial Artist + Performer seems way better matched than Martial Artist + Politico. Absol is right that adding in Exile on top is a pretty solid bet for adding a Force angle.

Well, you can strip it down to reduce encumbrance if you have the HP.

Except one of the key traits of Spiderman is his smack-talk. Literally insulting his enemies to drive them to do stupid things. And while Distracting Behavior is good, I don't think a few threat equal what Spidey tends to do to his opponents. The fact that with Supreme Scathing Tirade, you can do it as a maneuver and still attack, feels more like Spidey's bag to me. But you do you.

Martial artist already provides coordination dodge
