So since we already get Capitan rex's mini in the core box, any ideas for a custom leader abilities and cards for him?

If he's already in the core, they already have rules foe him. Id rather see rukes for actual commanders like General Solo, Calrissian and Rieekan, etc. Hera and Kanan could be a group commander unit.
Frankly they could just make something up since we don't have a whole lot from the movies

To clarify; The core set does not have rules for Rex, nor does it officially recognize one of the rebel troopers as Rex. However, one of the rebel trooper sculpts does seem to have been based on the same extra from Return of the Jedi who has been tentatively identified as an old Captain Rex, and I think this is what PK421 is talming about.

That Is an official retcon from the Mouse.
It's not stated anywhere that Rex is in the core. Sure, one of the minis looks a whole lot like him, but its not officially him.
So for now you can do a "counts as" and maybe give him Leia Organa stats, until a more applicable character comes along?
Ok! Off-topic but a random cool detail I literally just found out about:
Rex puts on the scout trooper armor of the trooper they capture with Han's little "over the shoulder tap" trick! And then guards the door as they infiltrate the bunker.
Which means there's a scene with Rex trying to bluff the Imperials about what's going on before getting captured...
The story practically writes itself.
