Dengar being shot at with Gunner Ship? When does his ability trigger?

By eagletsi111, in X-Wing

So was playing a game versus Han with a Gunner and PS11. I got my Dengar to face his in his front arc. I had 3 hull and he had 2 hull. He fired at me, and rolled only 1 hit, which I rolled 2 evades and dodged. He said ok Gunner, I said wait Dengar goes first, because it says after you attack and he argued Gunner says immediately. To not argue with him, I let him go, with the 2nd shot he killed me as I rolled 2 blanks and died. Still got to Dengar shot back and Kill him too. Anyway, What is the timing? Does Dengar trigger before Gunner?

I might have killed him if it did and he wouldn't get to gunner then, correct?

Thanks

Both abilities are post-attack abilities allowing you to attack, so they have the exact same timing. Comes down to initiative for who shoots first. Regardless of death, both ships get to shoot.

Ok. So I had initiative. So I would have gotten a Dengar shot back, now if I kill him his gunner still goes off?

@Crit Happens is correct. Both abilities are triggered by the attack and resolved in Step 9 in initiative order. Remember FFG clarified immediately was used for emphasis only.

That's right! So didn't matter either way, Unless the guy with initiative gets the blinded crit on the other guy.

Thanks,

Per the simultaneous attack rule:

"After a ship has resolved its opportunity to attack, before it is destroyed, it can resolve any abilities that trigger after performing an attack."

It's not about it being a simultaneous attack, because the attacks listed in OP's post are not following simultaneous attack rule. If they were, then this would only be true if their PSs were equal, which they're not (11 vs 9 in the OP).

It's because you don't remove any ships destroyed by an attack until Step 10. Anything that is triggered in steps before that, i.e., Step 9, when you treat Gunner attacks and Dengar attacks, takes place with no regard as to whether the owning ship has been destroyed or not. This is all (probably not as) clarified (as it should be) in the timing chart of the FAQ. Step 9 abilities all divert you from executing Step 10 until their abilities have resolved.

(Incidentally, Step 10 is when you decide that a ship is not destroyed until it has had a chance to attack, if it qualifies for simultaneous attack rule. Simultaneous attack doesn't instantly send you on another attack route, either-- unlike Gunner, Dengar, etc. If all the ships on the table are PS2, and a ship gets destroyed, all of the remaining ships of the player with initiative will receive their opportunity to attack before the destroyed ship gets its attack. And then, if the player without initiative so chooses, all of his other ships could attack before the destroyed ship.)
