Dengar Nym or Dengar Asaj: Can it still compete at the top?

By Tupacca, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi all,

Recently put Dengar back on the table and to my delight was reminded of how how great he can be. Obviously we are currently in a meta saturated with bombs, high PS, alpha strikes, Rebel Fenn Rau/Ghosts and the return of Palp Aces, but I think Dengar and the right wingman can compete. Please see below a few lists ideas.

Dengar, P1 Title, Expertise, K4, Glitterstim, Countermeasures (57)

Nym, Adaptability, Auto blaster tournament, EM, Cruise Missiles, Ion Bombs, Thermal Detonators, Title, Trajectory Simulator, Genius, LRS (43)

I have quite a few permutations of Nym that include VI, harpoons, proton bombs etc, but having CM and GS on Dengar really restricts the points.

or

Dengar, P1, Title, Expertise, K4 (52)

Asaj, Expertise, Latts, Engine, Rigged Chute (48) or Asaj, PTL, Latts, Engine, GS or (Rigged Chute/Contraband cybernetics) (48)

This above lists are not tier 1 IMO, but I feel they can perform close to that.

Let me know what you think!

Personally I think you want to keep dengar as cheap as possible as he can easily start becoming the big force that if your opponent takes out you have no chance. So I like as I have said in every other Dengar post:

Dengar (49)

Title

Wired

Maul

Nym (49)

LRS

Havoc

VI

TLT

Harpoons

Bomblet Gen

Acc Corector

Trajectory Sim

Total (98)

But this is just my personal favourite.

You cannot take ACC and Trajectory?

Another great Dengar I've played against is Lone Wolf, Gonk, Experimental Interface, and Burnout SLAM. I ought to have lost to it with my Ghost/Fenn, but I got crazy lucky with Ghost green dice (and Zeb at the end, who wouldn't die). Seriously, Gonk refreshed at least 6 shields over the course of the game, I think. Consider that for the moment. Killing Dengar is already a threatening business. Killing him twice? Yikes. It's going to take skill to fly with the asymmetric greens, though. But a pretty standard thing which can happen is to put 3 or so damage on Dengar, then he slips out and regens for a few turns, but comes back at full...

The partner was a Nym with Autoblaster, TrajSim, Bomblets, Genius (he used it once!), Extra Munitions, Harpoon Missiles, Guidance Chips, so fairly light and a decent bid. I'm sure some form of Asajj build would fit; the Dengar is only 53 points.

I've flown it once myself with a ridiculous 43 point Guri (Advanced Proton Torpedoes and Scavenger Crane) and that Dengar was strong enough to carry that silly Guri.

Whoops not trajecter sim, I ment Genius

K4 Dengar is just so predictable and slow now without Unhinged. I honestly think the P1 title should have been errata'd to add a scum astro slot. As it is now you have an expansion where the ship can't use some of the cards included with it. I don't think you can go Dengar-lite because he won't do enough damage to justify his point cost. But if you go Dengar heavy with K4 and Expertise a good player is going to take advantage of his limited greens. The prevalence of alpha strikes probably doesn't help his case either.

Agreed, Wired/Maul/P1 is a wonderful Dengar build, and perfectly viable these days - wildly adaptable, consistently modified, etc etc. Nym and Asajj can both be one of many standard builds, and the pairing is actually quite strong these days! Personally, I would choose Asajj:

Dengar

Wired

Maul

Punishing One

Asajj

Shadow Caster

Latts

Gyro Targeting

Expertise or PTL

Both of these guys have a lot of hull hidden behind very respectably, and freely modified agility (they can both focus for defense). With Expertise, they both have mods that cannot be Fenned, hotcopped, etc etc - though PTL provides a bit more action versatility for Asajj. To each their own.
