What if..(x-wing style)

By Fippo, in X-Wing

What if:

Actions could only be performed by discarding a card from a deck of cards, thats put together during listbuilding.

i dont understand the point of this thread

You dont have to. Purely for fun, and I liked the idea about disposable cards.

Move on if you dont like it, respond if you wantto contribute.

ok, i don't really see what adding more decks of cardboard would add to a game famous for it's simplicity and ease to learn, but yeah, great thread, great idea

So, something similar to command tokens in Armada then? Now, are you proposing that actions not be on the chassis or pilot, but drawn randomly from an action deck?

There has already been a great deal of pushback against the current direction of the game: "combo-wing," over-powered cards, and the idea that X-Wing has turned into a game won at listbuilding and cards used instead of by maneuvering.

I do not think this would be a good game for the concept.

More that it would make reposition more costly and limited, and add more strategy to reposition. Mitigating constant boosting from large base.

So, you build a deck of say... 25 cards. You can only have 2 copies of each individual non-unique card. These cards have your "actions"or special abilities.

So there would only be 2 boost actions in the deck. You have a hand of 5 cards. You may play your boost action during the action phase for your chosen ship. You also have another card "reduce defending ships agility value by 1" that you could play during the assign target ship step.

Could be interesting in a hypothetical situation with the idea fleshed out more.

Umm Cloaking soontir? potentially a problem with his mounds of defenses...

Yeah... There are problems to attend too haha.

What if you had to actually complete a maneuver to benefit form an upgrade that said "after X manuver" regardless of if were are talking shield regen, target lock, evade, remove stress, etc.? Imagine how muxh important actual maneuvering would be?

Slight adjustment to the OP's intention .. but I can see some fun in randomising the action cards in your deck, placing them face-down and choosing the top one.

What if we could get the TIE Reaper preview article today?

Has anyone heard of Destiny? I think the idea in the OP is basically a game called Destiny, except there would be a bunch of pointless plastic models somewhere on the table between the players.

X-wing needs less cards, not more.

Okay, My turn:

What If: Shields didn't block damage. Instead, you can remove a shield token to reroll a green die.

Actually warhammer shadespire was my inspiration. I just like the idea of having more things that get discarded after use. Constant repositioning is really strong, limiting it to a few uses per game is interesting to me.

What if: tournaments covered more than the 100/6 format. Suggestions have included rounds with rotating missions to promote more creative list building with squads that can handle multiple play styles, with an escort mission being the most discussed.

There is something pretty similar Imperial Assault.

Each player builds a command card deck, and each card can have a certain number of copies, as well as a points cost. Cards will often reference certain keywords or specific characters (so only Vader can Force Choke, or suchlike). As turns go on and cards are played, you'll refresh your hand.

Personally, I don't like it for X-Wing. I don't want to add the randomness of "oh, I didn't draw my Correllian Slip for Wedge, so I lost him on the first engagement." If going in a similar direction of getting extra-powerful actions, I'd rather just have more disposable upgrades. Glitterstim is kind of a single-use SUPER-FOCUS-TOKEN-EXTREME!!! and having a few more cards like that doesn't seem unreasonable. I wouldn't even hate if there were a new upgrade slot (tricks? mementos?) to hold a few of these. I'd try to make them more limited to ships and ship types (so you couldn't just load an entire squad with Correllian Slips), but having a random deck to go through seems like it'd be a mistake.

What if: We had to use chocolate pieces as shields? Lose a shield eat the shield. That would fix the regen shenanigans. Hold on a sec I need to use the restroom to gain my shield back.

What if Fantasy Flight Games made X-wing as a campaign game like Descent instead of a competitive game? Could FFG make an AI app for Imperial and Scum pilots?

I'm not sure it'd be chocolate when you got it back, so it wouldn't count. At least, I hope they wouldn't. Your cards might start to smell bad after a while.

I would like both campaign and competetive modes. They actually did include at least one small campaign With the cr-90.
