Defender - Defending - Is there a difference?

By atkrull, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Morning everyone. Had a question pop up about Torani Kulda's ability and does it proc Jostero's ability. Consensus says no. I just need some clarification on Step 8 when it says "after defending" you are still considered defending, or are you know a defender in step 8. And also is there a difference between defender and defending? Thanks to anyone who can help me understand this.

Yes it does.

'After defending' abilities happen after defending is complete.

THe chart still identifying them as the defender notwithstanding.

So there is do difference between being a defender and the act of defending. You are just considered "defending" all the way through step 10.

Incorrect.

You are considered to be defending between steps 1v, and 7iv (the second time through, if using PTAT weapon). After that, it's 'after defending' and that's not 'defending' anymore.

Okay, then Torani Kulda's ability happens in step 8, when the ship is no longer defending. And Jostero's ability is against a ship that is "not defending"... Sorry for making this difficult.

Correct. Torani's ability has the "after you perform an attack" timing and is not an attack so it happens in step 8 and can trigger Jostero.

It's not been confirmed by FAQ yet but I would rule Jostero to happen in step 9 regardless of when he triggered in the preceding steps, the precedent being the FAQ for Quickdraw.

Just to be crystal clear:

Torani shoots at a target, after the attack, in step 8, Torani uses his ability on the ship that he just shot at. That ship chooses to keep their focus token and take a damage. Jostero then triggers his ability and shoots at the same target.

Is that how you are saying this works?

Yes.

thanks....
