Going from Core set to The Forgotten Age

By Cuppiburra, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Hi, I am new to the Arkham Horror card game and am still working through the core set Night of the Zealot. I'm wondering whether I could jump to the latest Forgotten Age cycle and skip those in between, the Dunwich and Carcosa cycles? I have found that the availability and cost of those in between cycles and packs is an issue here in Australia. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Matt

They haven't released The Forgotten Age yet and once they do, its 6 months after that they release the last of the mythos packs to finish the cycle.

It's your call, but if it was me, I would like to buy into a cycle that I knew that I could get the entire story for.

On the other hand, if you can't get all of Dunwich or all of Carcosa (the last of Carcosa's mythos packs comes out next week) it may not matter if you could theoretically get packs if in actuality you can't.

All cycles are self-contained stories and do not depend on each other regarding story content, rules, investigators or player cards. Also, they have no real order in which they should be played. If you have a core set, you can grab any cycle you want and play that.

My wife and I did much the same thing going from Core to Path to Carcosa. The first few scenarios felt very hard, because our card pool was so limited. There are at least a few cards in Dunwich Legacy that feel like they should have been staples, but they didn't have enough room in the core set - this is especially so for the seekers, but generally true throughout. However, by the time we were about halfway through Path, we were feeling better about our card selections.

Because we started with so few cards available and were getting the new packs as we went, we allowed ourselves one free level-0 card per scenario with no xp cost. So, not strictly by the book, but it made it easier to upgrade our decks as we got new cards in. There are still some nifty cards in the Dunwich cycle, and I may yet fill them in some time, but I no longer feel like I'm unable to build good decks. Oh, and don't even think about playing on hard or expert - stick with standard or even easy.

No guarantee that Forgotten Age will follow the same pattern, but it's still the way I'd bet...

So far as I know there's no explicit difficulty difference between the campaigns. It's really just all down to the card pool you want available. So far I feel like most of the packs have been pretty well balanced, so it's mostly personal preference.

Out of curiosity, why would Forgotten Age be any easier/cheaper to get there than Dunwich or Carcosa? Is it just because it's new so not sold out/waiting on reprint/dealing with scalpers?

The fact that it'll be new, will guarantee it'd be stocked. Most of Dunwich is out of stock atm, and Carcosa will probably follow the same pattern. Also, you can definitely jump into Forgotten Age, but it'll likely be the most difficult campaign yet, and you wouldn't have much of a card pool to work from. It's definitely worth picking up the Carcosa and Dunwich Deluxes at least if you can afford it, as they'll have Investigators and a good chunk of player cards to help you
