Rant on Availability

By Budspencer1971, in Star Wars: Destiny

I got in the game a Month or so ago as i was looking for some table game to play with my GF when the weather is bad. I did some research and discovered this. I bought an almost complete box of legacies and got an awesome lot of good cards out of the box. Sadly i am looking for the other sets that came before and the booster boxes are really hard to find and are going for very expensive prices.

It is kind of sad that FF is not willing to get some extra prints done for the earlier set to let the new incoming players catch up. I am not going to get into talking about the cards as an investment but it is sad that you cannot get a chance to claim a good card out of a decently priced box.

Also another part of my rant is based on the fact that this game is only available at specialty shops. On the flip side of this, barely anyone know of this game in my town and no one seems to be interested to even order anything out of this despite the game being quite interesting and entertaining. If it's not anywhere it won't ever pick up, i would say. I hope that FF has designs to get the game more out in the public than being low key and niche like it is right now. The game concept is great and awesome. It needs to get out there to help availability grow.

cheers

I infer from your post that you are new to this kind of game. CCGs are built upon a model of waves of product that goes out and then isn't printed again, instead rotating out in time and replaced with new product. New players are expected to concentrate on current set releases and the Trilogy format, and then once the rotation catches up with wherever they entered the game then they can be competitive in Standard. If they wish to accelerate this then they can of course pay more to hunt up old product, but it's not particularly expected.

As for only being present in specialty shops, it's easier said than done to get product out on major retailer shelves as shelf space is very limited. Personally I think they've done a really good job getting the 2-player starter out to major stores and boosters available in Barnes & Noble.

As for booster boxes being hard to find, if you live in the US and Canada they really aren't. You just have to be prepared to look online. www.coolstuffinc.com www.miniaturemarket.com and www.teamcovenant.com all have all waves of Destiny boxes in stock right now.

Where are you looking to buy? (geography wise)?

In the UK prices for boxes of Spirit of Rebellion and Empire at War are slightly cheaper in some places (example: https://www.magicmadhouse.co.uk/search/star-wars-destiny-booster-box ) presumably as it's seen as a less desirable excess product (and some stores may have over-ordered)

Awakenings you may struggle to find as they didn't print much of it to begin with (they were unsure how popular the game was going to be so there was a pretty big shortage when the game first came out).

I understand the whole principle of what you said. Things will be official for tournaments then rotated out. Pretty much same a MTG or Heartstone. The point of my post if that no one locally seems to know what this is about or really cares. It would be an aggravation for them to deck due to low distributions which means a hefty price tag to get the older stuff in original packaging. Thus no one knows about this and rarely anyone asks for their local game store to get them. In bigger cities, this would not be a major issue, but in smaller cities, it is. Visibility is nul and unless the game ends up at a big chain store like Walmart, there will be no interest since it is not on the shelves to peak someone's interest. Long story short- game is great-sparsely distributed- and it could get way bigger if it would have a bigger distribution channel.

FF should go as far as give away a free deck to be given out in store like WOTC is doing to attract new players or at least something to have a presence out there somehow. This game to me could get up there as high at MTG , Pokey or Yugi if visible.

Getting a booster box is not an easy affair in Canada. Not a ton fo distributor and no one is doing any favors to anyone price wise.

I even compared going the booster box way versus buying singles and money wise the booster box always comes on top because of the ratio of legendary in a box and the chance to pull enough legendaries of interest. You are almost always better off to buy a booster box then fill in the holes with single purchases. In the US the hobby is cheap. Not so for people in Canada.

A booster box will cost me 140$ when said and done.

Awakening is 75 bucks on Amazon.... US of course. They are more than available, just maybe not locally.

My advice is hit ebay and order the singles you want to play with. Set a budget, prioritize the cards, buy until you run out of money.

I don't think buying the cards is the exact issue he is having though.

Imagine if you couldn't go to your FLGS and get some games in. I have made a few more friends from my Thursday night crew and we have a meet at my place with a few games and BBQ. Now because he lives in a small town and the stores aren't supportive, it is that whole social aspect of our hobby that is missing.

Imagine having a regional and only you and your wife showed up. :(

Sadly I just don't have a good suggestion. Maybe ask the local mall if you can do a learn to play day one weekend and then have some table space to play once a week for 3 hours. As long as you buy food and drinks at the local businesses they may not mind so much. All it takes is 4 people and from there more will come.

It took Wizards of the Coast a few years before Magic was big enough to appear in big box stores like Target and Walmart in the US, or even book stores like Barnes and Noble. Destiny is going on it's second year. It's a baby in terms of the game life cycle. As a collectible game format, it is be design going to be more difficult to acquire older sets as time progresses.

But the great thing is that new cards will always be just over the horizon. Legacies is a fantastic set with new mechanics and combinations that have changed the face of the game, and the new set was just announced that will add even more changes. It might be a tough spot right now, because the current cycle is only moving into it's second phase, and the first cycle cards (Awakenings, Spirit of Rebellion, and Empire at War) are starting to sunset.
