Dealing harpooned condition damage order

By kingofpain97, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If you are harpooned, do you deal damage from an attack with an uncancelled crit before or after you deal facedown damage for harpooned crit? I know it doesn’t matter much in grand scheme of things, just curious for order of when the crit would appear.

The damage from Harpooned goes first before any other damage is resolved.

...in this situation. ;) Harpooned is a serious mess of a card, that requires a very careful reading to make sure it's applied correctly. But in a nutshell, @Innese is correct: When triggered by an uncancelled critical result from an attack, the damage from Harpooned (1 facedown card for defender, 1 normal damage for everyone else at R1) happens first. Then the condition card is removed, before regular attack damage occurs (regardless of whether or not the damage to that ship would be lethal).

Correct, the trigger for Harpoon is when it hits, not after so you do the condition card, then deal the damage and discard the card.

Just for clarity's sake, there's some language that's a little confusing, in this statement.

  • The trigger for Harpoon Missiles is an attack that hits. After resolving all of the attack damage, you assign the condition card "Harpooned!"
  • There are two triggers for "Harpooned!":
    • If a ship with the "Harpooned!" condition card is hit with an uncancelled critical result , then before the attack damage is dealt, the condition card triggers its first clause, deals damage, and is removed. After that point, you deal regular attack damage.
    • If a ship with the "Harpooned!" condition card is destroyed by any means, then the condition card triggers its second clause, deals damage, and is removed.

Specifically, though, the effects of "Harpooned!" that come from an uncancelled critical result happen BEFORE the attack damage. Condition card-based damage is dealt, and the card discarded, BEFORE regular attack damage is dealt. This prevents the card from double-triggering, from both a critical hit, and a ship's destruction.
