Using the Duty mechanic for fame?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Just an idea that I'm totally shooting from the hip on. It came to me as I was walking back from breakfast: what do you guys think about using the duty mechanic to track wannabe celebrities and their fame?

Okay, here's the why I'm asking background - we just started a brand new game, one that's less combat and military intensive (probably) and one that's centered around a up and coming rock band. So it occurred to me that instead of going from Private to Lieutenant to Commander to Admiral, we could use it for charting the progression from Youtube schlubb to viral sensation to Playing casino venues to headlining the Superbowl halftime show.

I'm not sure if the mechanic of "Level Up, Get Cool Toys" would be applicable here - or perhaps yes, that their record contract rider says they get stuff along the way.

Now, I haven't even bounced this idea off @Split Light or the rest of the group yet - so who the **** knows if it'll even fly at the table. But I thought I'd throw it out to the peanut gallery first for general response to the mechanic.

Seems reasonable - even the "get toys" part. I'd assume that as their fame increased, so would their fortune - hence, more toys. Even if they aren't making mad credits, fans and companies would be sending them stuff, either out of admiration or hope that they'd mention their cool new CEC starship.

Now, would you want individual members to have an individual "Fame Duty" - something they in particular do to get famous? "Lead singer", "Temperamental Artist", "Party Animal", "Muse", etc.?

I hadn't thought on that level of granularity yet, but that sounds reasonable. The up-side is that we're not game devs trying to write a mechanic for the entire audience, that we could tailor the individual tasks to get famous to each player. At a high level I was just thinking of basing it on how well they rolled for their performances - roll really well, get a huge boost - but a "I got a Spacebook like!" is a thought too.

Or perhaps the members have their own individual projects they promote through the band like clothing deals and model career and such?

I would see it working if they signed to a company. Then that would be where the Duty awards are comimg from. If they are independent than i see the number to dictate status but maybe cut out or reduce the awards.

If they decide to sign on with a company, there's always Obligation... this might be one of the few cases where mixing Obligation and Duty on a party level might work. Have everyone chip in on the Duty to track how well they're doing, but they still have Obligation hanging over their heads as well... Just because you go on tour doesn't mean that all of those issues go away... Unless your record company buys them off. Then you either just have Duty, or Duty and One. Big. Obligation.

For a scrappy up and coming band, I like Obligation per normal, and some way to track fame (Duty works great to my mind). Working out a way to customize it if it works for the table is just bonus sauce, in my world...

Seems reasonable, it works for pc’s running a business too so I can’t see why it wouldn’t work here.

Sponsorship is already an obligation. That could work.

Really? In which book?

Or perhaps a "You like my stuff? Buy me something from Amazon!" Wishlist to get crowdfunding support.

I can't remember specifically, I think Enter the Unknown. I am AFBs at the moment.

Eh, me too - no big deal, it wont take long to skim all the likely tables. I'll start with EtU and the Colonist books.

Seems to be a popular concept. Let me introduce: Loreena Sunrider and the Meilooruns…
