Commanders used as a “patching” tool

By TylerTT, in Star Wars: Legion

If you have played FFG starwars games before you know they use new product to fix old product all the time.

Legion’s products appear to give players the options for a unit up front. And developers have said that they don’t want to have players hunting down a bunch of other products to play one unit.

so this left me wondering how they planned to buff the occasional dud unit and adjust the overall balance of the force.

The latest developer q&a sheds some light on a possible method.

One thing we're excited about is just buying a new commander for $12-13 completely changes your listbuilding potential. So a smaller financial investments really gives you a lot of new gameplay options.”

sounds like a great method to patch the game. I look forward to buying many intresting commanders over the hopefully long life of this game.

upgrades that suit multiple units with less of a buff to the included one is a second.

take impact grenades for example. There are several layers built in..... I see commanders more as a setup for an army or tactics "theme" than a patch.

I think this is also a way to keep the core corps units viable. X-Wing players are too familiar with the fact that T-65 X wings are basically dead in the game named after them. I think Legion knows that it can't afford to have Stormtroopers become non-competitive! By using commanders and also support units, they have more fine tuning dials to keep the game thematic and fresh without abandoning the main attraction.

The best way to keep core corps units viable is to severely limit new releases of corps units (instead focusing on the other chart choices). You have to take three of them so no matter what they'll stay relevant if there aren't too many choices.

to be fair Alex Davy said this in response to a question about model options not unit options. We may very well see trooper "fix" expansions that come with new heavy weapons and tech/grenade upgrades, or something akin to X-wings title and modification upgrades(sergeants perhaps).

Unit independent upgrades such as medics / mechanics / specialist / droid. These can also be cross faction....*

Plus dont forget the rule book is an online living one... so they can 'tweek' the stats and rules as the game goes along

*edit - so you could have a blister of K2SO, comes with a card to allow him to join Dark Side Corp units & one that allows him to join Light Side Corp units + a couple of other upgrades

There’s a lot of design space open with the Personnel and Heavy Weapon upgrades. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw packs released that focused on giving us more options for these. But who knows. We’ll have to wait and see.

Oh yes it would be very easy to release a stormtrooper pack that is just add ons and options for Stormtroopers. a a bunch of sculps for those addons and maybe a new alternatate sculpt as well just for good measure.

Being forced to take them doesn't keep them relevant just because there are no other options, they just become a 120 point "tax" to play the good stuff, and then have a minimal effect on the game state. Having different Commanders/Special Ops that reward fielding certain Corps units with synergies is the better strategy. For instance, Veers has good synergy with Stormtroopers with his Spotter ability and Precise on the Stormtroopers.

The Trooper and Specialist upgrades can similarly allow for updates and improvements.

My hope is ffg if and when something needs fixing the thing that needs fixing is fixed.

Eg, lets say HH12 troopers aren't competitive, old FFG would release a new heavy weapon to replace it.

I hope new FFG simply erratas the HH12's point cost .

Please please please just fix what needs fixing without adding xwing style crappy titles.

I'm fairly certain that FFG has done point adjustments via FAQ for Destiny, so there is precedent for this.
