^This + a dash of Occam's Razor always helps with SW related names.

Lucas didn't pluck this stuff out of thin air, its all based on something from our world. Whether its Vader's suit being based on Samurai armour, or Tatooine being a real place (Tataouine, Tunisia) it all came from real life in some way.

If there is a real lizard called a Gila Monster, and the fictional ship is named after a fictional lizard that closely resembles the real lizard, its very safe to assume that it would be pronounced the same way.

Oicunn's Razor? Is my VT-49 missing a title card??!!

Quote

At a length of up to two feet and a maximum weight exceeding five pounds, the venomous Gila monster (pronounced HEE-luh) is the largest lizard native to the United States.

Apparently we should all be affecting highly unconvincing Mexican accents when using the Killergorilla/Kaijugodzilla/Kimono/Kimi Raikonnen/Kim Kardashian/Whatever The Heck You Call It.

or just stick to M-12!

And yes, all the Mandalmotors fighters are apparently named after similar animals; the series of fighters in star wars galaxies consisted of:

  • M3A Scyk
  • M4C Dunelizard
  • M12L Kimogila
  • M22T Krayt

They're the pointy bits on the front. What did you think does the damage when he collides?

Yeah, no.

It's Kimo-he-la. It's based on the Gila Monster, which is pronounced He-la

Sarcasm is a tone of voice thing. It's hard to pull off using only electrons. (Not impossible, but very difficult.) In any instance in which a writer is trying to be sarcastic, and the reader fails to "hear" the sarcasm, the fault is with the writer.

(Deadpan irony, on the other hand, works perfectly well when writing. At least partially because it's just as fun when the reader doesn't get it.)

...I will admit that I've said it with a hard G for somewhere around twelve years now. Oops.

Oicunn's Razor - Title 1pt - When you reveal your dial, choose an enemy ship at range 1-2, if that ship has already activated this round, you may rotate your dial to another manoeuvre.

Me to, but then I've also done that for the lizard. Just goes to show how wrong you can be.

I second the 'it's an actual word' argument.

The fact that it's not an originally anglic word is irrelevant; the word exists, and given that the whole fighter series is named after fake sci-fi lizards, you should probably use the pronunciation of the real lizard that's an element of the name.

It's much like the whole "Executor" thing. As far as I'm concerned, it's "ex·ec·u·tor" as in, someone who enacts someone's will (note that the other known class is the 'Mandator'), not ex·e·cu·tor".

There is a word pronounced that way, but it's 'Executioner' and that's not what the ship's called.

Possibly, but languages are full of words that are misappropriated and altered from other languages - see Orleans (Or-Lay-On in French) Vs New Orleans (Or-Leens in American-English).

I've never heard the 'Hee-la' pronunciation, but being English it doesn't come up as often as it would in America. As long as everyone understands what you're talking about I guess it's not so much of a problem.

(I know, this is more about pronounciation, but still, I like the meme)

I maintain that Geela stills sounds better, no matter how wrong it is.

Both are valid ways to pronounce 'executor'.
