Looking at the game that are out there... I've got to wonder if is any better game than Armada?
Has anyone who has seriously played Armada, plus other games, honestly said that Armada was not the best?
And if so.... why are you lying?

X-Wing. Sorry!

How though? I'm not saying X-Wing is bad - as it's actually very fun - but I just can't see how you can play these 2 games and thing that Armada isn't the best thing ever.
What genre are we comparing with? Because there are a lot of games better than Armada.

Any really. Lets hear em. Bonus points if you can add some tidbits as to what makes you love those games.
(My point is that this game simply doesn't get old, for me. I ALWAYS look forward to playing it and that's rare nowadays considering how much my collection of games is growing).

Any type of game at all, wargames, or just spaceship games?
If we're talking about tabletop games/wargames then, at least until I get more time with Legion, I believe Armada to be top tier. The best? Well, there's a lot of competition, and a lot of diversity. Warmahordes are fun, though, and for me they win on their original and engaging setting as well as superb miniatures quality.
If we're talking Star Wars board and tabletop games, then, well, Armada loses to Rebellion in my eyes. Rebellion beats Armada due to being cheaper, more accessible to "casuals" and having more cinematic feel
Also, I can play it with my girlfriend, who has a curious grudge against playing Armada for some reason
But out of IA, Legion so far and X-wing, than yea, Armada wins. Kind of narrow competition though.
EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention Star Wars LCG. That game was a lot of fun and does not get enough credit for what it is (or rather was :()
Edited by Shanturin1) X-wing is fast, dogfight playstyle. To me, that makes the game more fun than slower, capital ship style.
2) Unique painting. (And I'm not saying Armada's bad at this.) Capital ships have 100s maybe 1000s of people. So they have to be painted all the same. Smaller ships are more personal, so you can get more unique paints.
3) Easier to learn. You can just pick up a dial and start with X-Wing. With Armada, you need to know the difference between turns, dials, rulers...to me that's just too much.

I'm right here with you Crabbok. If you could play Armada in an hour, it'd take over. (Since I'm addicted and don't care, it is my main love.)

DD, the Court of "Have you seen the Painting Thread?" throws out this ridiculous point
While Armada is easily better than X-Wing,
I also enjoy Battlefleet Gothic a lot and cant say which of both would be the better game.

I was just looking over there and, yes, there are some good paints, but most of them are just touch-ups of detail, and as you can see, I love the comma.
In terms of mechanics, I think Armada is a great game. I think that the length of game keeps it from being the "best" and the only the most important area of improvement for me would be in activation (which since Armada came out, I've played other games that handle it better). If I could find an answer to those two, I'd probably like it over X-wing, but Xwing's pace is much better for my own purposes that it's hard to beat.
Edited by AlexWI still can't decide if I like more Armada or Rebellion, but one of those two is for sure the best game of all in my opinion.
Armada is the best miniatures game I have played, but there are other games I like more. Given a choice, I would rather play Twilight Imperium 4th Edition or A Game of Thrones: the Board Game.
I love Armada, but the game is far from perfect.
My biggest issue is the time commitment and non-viable upgrades/ships. I want to bang out games quickly with crazy stuff, but 2 hours is a long time, and if I'm investing 2 hours into a game, I may as well try and actually win.
What makes Armada great is the upgrade system. I like taking a ship and making it unique every time I play with it.
For turn based strategy games, XCOM series is much better.
For miniature games, I expect Legion to be better because it feels familiar to Armada but doesn't suffer from activation issues, and winning by destroying your enemy.
For a game that I want to play all the time, it's Stardew Valley. Story driven game that takes the idle economy manger style and combines it with a crafting system. And it has an amazing sound track.
For all time best game, it's Star Craft. It's hard to beat because it's still being played 20 years later, and created the eSports scene. Star Craft also gave us Day9, who was a trailblazer for game streaming.
X-wing is better, not in terms of gameplay, but for actual new content.
For me Armada is badly marred by the irregular and infrequent waves.
In terms of gameplay i REALLY like Armada, no questions.
There is that My Little Pony game the BoardGameGeek has raved about. Could it be better than Armada?
Edited by GrandAdmiralCrunchI'm on the "Armada is one of the best tabletop games" wagon too. Sure, the release schedule is slower than I'd like, but in return we get a far more balanced game than X-Wing or 40k can offer.
Sure, Warmachine is fun and I am darn near frothing at the mouth waiting for GW to re-release Battlefleet Gothic (Those plastic cruiser kits were so very nice!), and Firestorm Armada and Dystopian Wars bothhave their charms, but Armada really is my tabletopgame of choice these days.
In terms of Miniatures games, I don’t think anything holds a candle to Battletech. The game has an extraordinarily large ruleset available while only forcing you to use a minimal amount of so desired and either way is equally fun. You add in only what you want and have a staggering freedom of choice regardless. Armada doesn’t have anything like that.
I may have had a different attitude during wave 6, but the new activation manipulation cards are embracing the laziest strategy possible and come off like the death of fun. This is intended as hyperbole as Armada is still great fun, but FFG’s choices in wave 7 diminished that fun to me.
I very much like Armada. I think there are a few decisions here and there that have made me go "I wouldn't have done that ...".
- Making max speed 4 for ships, 5 for squadrons.
- Making medium distance such a narrow bands
- I think they should have made the sliding scale a bit steeper (ie: keep the CR90 the same size, but make the ISD about 60% the size is currently is, adjust everything else so suit) - gives more room for larger ships in the future.
- not dealing better with activations (Initiative-system would've been preferable to the current system).
I have a few things in mind as far as a new game based off of the armada engine, but I'm not there yet. Gotta finish KDY first.
The only game I enjoy more is Firefly the boardgame, but that's a completely different type of game and you can't really compare them.
The sliding scale is fine- if anything smaller small bases would be my preference!
Think about it- the iconic opening scene of Star Wars; the corvette is taking into the central hanger of the ISD and boarded.
Now imagine the game where the corvette is now as long as the ISD is wide.
I really like Armada. Gameplay is fun and very few games feel the same.
I do think a more regular release schedule would be nice. Not more releases, I like that we actually get some decent time to work through new ships and upgrades. But rather a new campaign each fall/early winter and a new expansion set each late spring / early summer would be nice.
I also do wish they would add a little more depth to objectives. The thematic ones are bad and the rest push fleets to be much more fixated on death match.
Largely it is a question of what type of game you like. Armada is a highly variable, mass combat game, that scales well from low (200 points), to insane (2,000+ points). I played many GW mass-combat games, but I need to go all the way back to Epic Space Marine from the early 90s to find a game that pushes all the same buttons for me as Armada. Armada is amazing!
Armada's kinda unique, in what it offers.
It's not a game that has appeal to everybody, but it's really good at the specific things it does, so people who like those things naturally really like it.
