Is there any *official* rule on how to discard?

Never mind, found it, page 22 in Miscellany.

My question follows yours- Is there anyway to voluntarily discard anything? Are you allowed to chuck stuff that isn't useful? Or is everything that you pick up bound to you (but you can share it with other characters)

Errr, there's probably going to be a ruling about voluntary clue discards (after visiting a location that doesn't allow you to pick them up). You can't normally just choose to discard though.

This topic suddenly springs a question into mind: if you sell something at Neil's Curiositie Shoppe, do you simply discard the item you sold, or do you return it to the box? It has never been clearly stated in the Kingsport expansion rules.

Presumably discard.

So, is it possible that you could sell a Sword of Glory to Neil, then have Ashcan Pete find it in a trashpile? It doesn't seem to make much sense...

No, but that's more of a thematic exception to the norm. Perhaps you should just consider it a coincidence that you happened to find another one. Or maybe Neil immediately misplaced it or found out it was cursed and threw it out or something.
