Last night I attended an organ recital, and during some of the darker songs, I began to ponder Waiqar the Undying. Yeah, I'm a nerd. Anyway, I realized that I don't know much about where he comes from. We know he was a general who fought for the Daqan, and we know that the Mistlands were once the 13th Barony, so he likely hails from that region. But he's obviously not a baron, so how did he come to be the leader of the Mistlands and the land once known as the 13th Barony? As I thought about it, the story seemed to unfold with the music...

"Having cursed himself and his legions to undeath, Waiqar turned towards home, or what had once been his home. The roiling clouds seemed almost to escort the ranks of skeleton troops as they marched purposefully northward. With each step, the anguish of their deaths battered against the memories of the life they had once known. As the city loomed larger on the horizon, so too, did the malice within their very bones. Those who were once kindred, were now bitter reminders of their cursed state. Axe and sword bowed to the wishes of the Deathborn as they mercilessly cut down the local garrison. Many of the Deathborn soldiers suffered wounds that would have killed a mortal man, and yet they continued to fight. Emboldened by their seeming invincibility, and spurned on by the screams of the innocent, they hastened through the city, slaughtering all that lived. It is said that none survived, but were that true, we would have no record of this tale. While many refer to that fateful confrontation between Waiqar and Timmorran as the Night of Betrayal, it is argued by some that the true Night of Betrayal was the annihilation of all inhabitants of the 13th Barony.

"In the ensuing days and weeks, dark wizards and necromancers from Nerekhall began to lend aid to Waiqar and to seek knowledge of his necromantic powers. Those who had been slain were reanimated, not as warriors, but as laborers to build Waiqar's citadel of Zorgas, and the Everliving Engine. With his new fortress established securely in the Mistlands, Waiqar the Undying began to execute his nefarious machinations to exact revenge on the coward Timmorran and all his kind, and to secure every last shard of the Orb of the Sky for himself."

So you're saying he slaughtered the entire 13th barony to swell his ranks? That's heavy!

I never considered before how he came to lead that barony. Interesting question.

He comes from Al-Akim. He was their greatest general and befriended Timmoran as he studied there.

When Timmoran told them of the threat his uncle posed in far off Terrinoth, Waiqar believed him and left with the army of Acolyte reinforcements that helped save the alliance of Humans/Elves/Dwarves.

Waiqar was awarded the 13th barony for his contributions during the First Darkness and was a good but militaristic ruler until, well, you know what happened.

Yes, that's from Realms of Terrinoth. I'm just reading it, pretty cool stuff.

Yes and no. I knew it since I was a kid back in the day and played Disk Wars

Waiqar was a champion unit of the Acolyte army, though at the time the part of the map they came from was the East and not the West, but still a desert nation. And he was Timmoran's greatest apprentice without mention of him.being the nation's greatest general before learning magic from Timmoran.

So a lot of this is the same as from Disk Wars, just filled out.
