Help with my GJ Deck

By goshdarnstud, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

The deck is basically a discard deck, though there seems to be a lot of crests in the deck as well. I don't currently run Distinct mastery but maybe I should. Should I gut this deck and try again or are there little tweeks that might be useful. I only have one copy of KotS and the Chapter packs

Is this intended for melee or joust?

Right off the bat I'd recommend adding carrion bird x3 to your character list. You haven't built yours as a seasonal deck, but I really like the birds for their usefulness, and if you do come across a seasonal deck as an opponent, you have some way to deny them their seasonal goodness. The birds aren't wasted even if you don't face a seasonal deck, since they are low cost and come with stealth.

For joust, I like the inclusion of the refugees, but I have found in melee they aren't quite as useful, though still not entirely a waste of a slot, since they can be used for claim soak and such.

That's all I have for now. Hope it helps.

Mostly Joust, though it will occasionally come out for melee.

Unfortunately, Greyjoy Mill isn't that viable yet. I mean it might be decent if you're running more copies of certain cards and running a bit more shadows, but your card pool is pretty limited at the moment. It's tough to make suggestions since you only have one copy of KoTS, but I'll do my best.

Plots:

You should swap out After Mummer's Ford (3-5-1) with Battle of Oxcross (4-3-1). Giving your opponent extra challenges isn't worth it. You're not playing a super strong military deck (i.e. some Stark decks), and even if you were Battle of Oxcross is still better. Swap An Empty Throne (3-5-1) with Winter Festival (4-5-1). I think An Empty Throne is only worth running if you're playing Bara; otherwise, it's not worth giving your opponent the extra challenge. Winter Festival's ability makes up for the potential extra power you would have won and provides more gold. Consider Mutual Cause over Siege of Riverrun so you can declare Intrigue challenges. The rest is fine.

Characters:

Add at least two Carrion Birds since you're not running seasons. I think the Drowned Disciples are way overpriced for what they do. I've never liked them. In CCG and LCG. Paying 3 gold to mill 3 cards is just silly. I rather see you run two more Godswood Attendant instead. I'm not crazy about Aeron, but you're running the Godswood Attendant x3 then I guess you can keep him in.

Dump the Salt Wives. You're better off running more copies of The Iron Mines and/or more copies of Maester Wendamyr. With only one KoTS this may not be feasible.

Wex Pyke should definitely be in there.

If you're really adamant about the whole mill thing, the Balon that takes Shadows cards may be better. A couple of Blackwater Raiders would work too. Lose the Drumbeater. I don't like Sea Raiders, but that's your call. First Mate is alright, but never cared for him much. Another Refugee or two would be good.

I'd like to see at least one more copy of Euron, but you only have 1 KoTS :P

Locations:

Great rid of the Bloody Keeps. If you're really that insistent on having it, then just run one. How you have 3 of them I don't know, since you only have 1 copy of KoTS. Instead run two more Gatehouses and another Iron Island Fiefdoms. Get rid of the Red Keep. Put one more Scouting Vessel. More The Iron Mines like I said earlier. A second Longship Iron Victory or Fishmonger's Square if you're that adamant on mill. Bay of Ice is your call. Longship Foamdrinker is pricey, but your call.

Attachments:

Support of Harlaw x3 is the way to go, but you only have one KoTS. Kraken Tatoos are good in concept, but I'd really like to see more pre-challenges mill. To make it's ability really mean something. FIshing Net is fine. Veteran Maurader is alright I guess. If you were running winter and playing Wintertime Marauders I'd say run Price of War instead.

Events:

Ahead of the Tide would be nice with the Bay of Ice. Maybe you should run another one or two or those? Run another To Be a Kraken. Thuggish Tactics are meh. I'd like to see you have bigger characters if you're going to run those. Kingsmoot is your call. Three Confessions would be nice. I'd accept running a Red Keep if you ran three Confessions. Assault of the Kraken is good. I rather see you run more of those than run After the Mummer's Ford or An Empty Throne.

In general it's tough for me to help you out. I loved Greyjoy mill in CCG but it's so much weaker in LCG that it's hard to give recommendations. I've found so far the best Greyjoy decks run winter, even if it's not not necessary for it to be Winter to win. Marauders and the Kings of Winter Agenda offer really nice card control. An example of a good card control deck is the most recent GenCon Joust champion. His deck is posted in article on the main FFG AGOT page. Just look through the archives.

Unfortunately you may need to get another KoTS or two :(

Hope my critique helps.

Forgot to mention. Mill is currently much more viable in melee as more cards get milled due to there being more decks in play. This will allow for more of your effects to trigger. You should consider adding Wharf Rats when playing melee. They will help the Kraken Tatoos nicely.

The couple of cards (like Great Hall) that I have multiples of come from the couple CCG cards that were given to me when I first started playing.
