Latest Shuttle Tydirium podcast (episode 74) ...

By Jeff Wilder, in X-Wing

Episode 74 is a good one. Some discussion of what an ideal X-Wing 2.0 would look like for the guys, and a good discussion of two of the objectives from Objectives play. (They covered Shuttle Scuffle and Rock Riot, and intend to cover the rest in future episodes.)

It bemuses me that I enjoy TST so much, yet also enjoy the Kryats [sic?] so much. They really are nearly diametrical opposites.

I might have to check it out, but I've never listened to either podcast.

I'm a S&V and Mynocks guy. I've thought about listening to krayts many times but haven't pulled the trigger. I'm afraid some of their sentiments will frustrate me. Like the "don't bother coming up with new lists, the best players have already discovered the best lists" mentality.

That's possibly good advice for newer players wanting to experiment with competitive play, but it's objectively terrible advice in every other situation.

Recently Tyler Tippet was on Mynock spouting the same nonsense and I almost turned it off.

"Don't innovate" is a bad message and influential players giving out terrible advice bothers me. So I haven't taken the plunge into Kraytdom.

I think we likely have very similar tastes. The Krayts annoy the crap out of me on a LOT of stuff about the game. (They're wrong on almost everything, but right just often enough to keep them from realizing they're wrong on almost everything.)

But ... they make me laugh.

The reason I say we likely have similar tastes is that my reaction to Tyler was exactly the same. The Krayts changed him.

The Shuttle frustrates me some days. I find their topics interesting and no other podcast covers the stuff they do... But sometimes individuals have an opinion that is horribly wrong and have me shouting at my phone in traffic.

Again though, they are entertaining and nobody else covers the non-tournament stuff like they do.

Krayts on the other hand... It's like listening to one of those shockjock type radio programs. You don't tune in with expectations of content.

My rule of thumb is that a podcast has to be fun, funny, or enthusiastically opinionated. If its not at least one of those things I stop listening immediately. This is X-Wing and nothing said about it has ever actually mattered. Im not sure its even possible to be correct about anything related to Toy Space Ships. But its fun to listen to people try.

So I listen to five podcasts regularly:

Shuttle Tydirium - Gives me my alternative formats fix.

Mynock Squadron and Scum and Villainy - Gives me my competitive fix, though they are on slightly different spots on the spectrum. (Read that however you like.) I also have known, very casually, most of the personalities for years, and like them a lot.

Radio TCX - This is just no-nonsense, get-down-to-brass-tacks content, presented in under 40 minutes. They're organized and edited to within an inch of their lives. It never feels like wasted time.

Krayts - Pretty much exactly the opposite of Radio TCX, (But in their flailing, they occasionally have insights and perspectives that are, for better or worse, novel. And, as I've mentioned before many times, they make me laugh.)

Agreed. X-Wing is a fun thing for me - I'm not professionally involved and not trying to win a gold medal anywhere. This is entertainment, and I listen to podcasts for entertainment. The Shuttle qualifies, so it's in! They make the mistakes, so I don't have to.

I think they are similar, though in that they are both totally honest about what they are.

Please report those individuals to the Ewok Death Squad and we will handle the situation.

I feel like we're on opposite sides of the spectrum in the way we approach the game, but we both work hard to make the game fun in our own ways. We can have common ground too, sometimes. We'll be featuring the Krayt-developed objective format heavily in at least two more episodes!

One does not simply complain to the cooking staff.

...and we are both from North Carolina. Well, half of the Shuttle is.
