It's basically "whenever". You are put into a pod with 9-10 players total (more or less). You then have 10 weeks to schedule a game with enough people in your pod to log 8 matches. Some people knock them all out the first week, some folks end up taking all 10 weeks to get them in. Up to you. And, well, the folks you need to schedule matches with.
At your own rhythm. Please read the guide linked above! It's explained in the 4th item and the whole document will you a good sense of how it's played down and what to expect at the end of the season if you do well.

My first league match was my first time using VASSAL. Person I was matched against was happy to walk me through it. The UI is actually pretty intuitive - you basically just right-click the thing you want to interact with and choose the interaction you want from the menu you get. What hung me up for a long time is that building your list in VASSAL...really, really sucks. It's super awful, but you don't need to do it, so...don't! You can use any of the popular list-builders and get a shareable link for your list, and the X-Wing VASSAL module can load up directly from that. It's quick and painless, that way!
But you'll also find tons of people online in X-Wing VASSAL at any given time, or in the Slack channel (FYI: you really do need to join Slack for this, I can't see any way it will work well if you don't), who are also happy to teach.

Question on the donations. The 10$ tier says focus tokens on the Season 6 announcment and the sign up sheet says shield tokens. Which is it? Already donated but I'm just curious.
