[Video] Toronto 2018 Regional @ For the Win Cafe

By Cod, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey everyone,

So we just this last week had our Toronto Regional for Imperial Assault at For the Win Cafe. 14 players attended and we were able to record video of the tournament starting at Round 2 and continuing to the end. I'll update this thread with videos as we release them. Enjoy!

Round 2:

Round 3:

Round 4 - Final Round of Swiss. Top 4 videos to follow.

Semifinal Match:

Final:

A nitpick, but on the Round 2 video, the crates mission should have two extra crates in the middle of the field, in the two squares between the other two middle squares. The mission page is pretty confusing, in that 6 crates are on there and then on the B mission there are two "B1" tokens to add two of them there. But there should be 8 total crates on the B map, for a whopping 32 points available from objectives.

Otherwise, really glad to have more quality streamed videos of competitive matches! Thanks for this!

that Han player could've gotten rid of Vader so early, forgetting return fire twice and forgetting to use Hera's surge to stun Vader with Lando

Yeah, I think Hera/Gideon/Lando could have contested three objectives at the end and kept the game in contention, too, though that would have left it at a pretty sudden-death point. It looked like the final handshake caught Kento slightly off-guard; I'm not sure he was tracking his opponent's VP count. Even the Rangers could have moved in to contest one site on their last activation, and I think they wound up taking a hit anyway.

Armchair quarterbacking after the fact, of course, but it's interesting to watch a Rebel list with serious options against a strong Imp list for objectives.

Top 4 match - this one has the 2016 Canadian Nationals runner-up playing a classic Stormtrooper/Imp Officer swarm against a Rancor and some bounty hunters.

Thanks for the clarification - I'll pass it on to the TO. And thank you for the complement!

*16 objective points per round

You've got them reversed -- A (Stashed Away) is score-2-for-standing; B (Concealed Treasures) is 4 points per retrieval, and it's the B map that has the extra 2 crates. (A is 12 points available per round).

Thanks for the comments, My round 4 wasn't much better but I still ended up getting dice.

Cheers, and congrats! Your game was fun to watch. I just played a Vassal game and forgot both Hera and Collateral Damage, either of which would have killed a 7-damaged heavy stormtrooper with focus, so I have no room to talk!

But again, really fun to see rebel lists doing well in high level play!

This is the Semifinal match. Fortunately some of the players stayed on after the cut to help us with commentary, @Kenseventy in particular. The top 4 cut featured all 3 players who traveled from Montreal to play, and this match features two of them. I'm told Ko-Tun Ferralo is an anomaly in competitive play...

just a bit before the tournament we had a game against each other on Jabba's and I had a Leia spy + rangers list and we did pretty much the same opening but this time things went better for me.

Don't forget @NeverBetTheFett and @cleardave !!

We come to the final, at last. Thanks everyone for watching this series - we hope to have more IA content in the future.

Again, armchair-quarterbacking here, but in the finals, around 17:45, Pierre-Yves' smuggler took an attack that missed, so he could have gained 2 movement points, and stepped to the right behind the partial cover. The EJet wouldn't have had enough movement to get LoS to him at that point.

Also, on Mak's round one attack, he could have hit the ERiot: Mak's accuracy surge is +2, and he had Hera for another +2, and still had a surge for pierce 2. He was showing 4 damage against 4 blocks, so the Critical Hit surge could have pushed 2 through, prompting a possible Zillo discard and at least one damage. Might have been worth it just so the focus and damage token weren't wasted (although they drew out Brace for Impact), but I'm sure with ERangers in the wings, you know you've got follow-up options.

Not sure how either thing would have played out, but the extra smuggler activation might have mattered, at least!

Mostly just commenting to remind myself of all the options we've got!

These videos were awesome. High quality, great commentary. The finale match was quite a treat to watch! Well done everyone, well done!!

You're absolutely right about the Smuggler - but it is one of the main things I forget on Smugglers as they usually die from one attack. I'll definitely have to remember (I also forget Hidden on Rangers after a kill very often).

As for the Riot Trooper being shot by Mak - Yes with Hera the attack would've hit, but for 1 damage at most (Pierce 2, maybe force the zillo) so I prefered to keep Hera's ability for someone else. If not for the 3 block, I might've been able to kill it or force the zillo + zillo discard for him to keep the Riot alive.

The amount of 3 blocks was insane.

It's hard to keep everything straight after a full day of playing, too. You guys both had ridiculously good positioning work, and it was clear that in round 3 you were both working out the pathway to 40. I've never made it to a final table outside of a store championship, but watching these games is great cross-training. Thanks for the work you put in!

One thing Carl did admit was in his favor is the longer clock on the Final. 65 minutes was my win, but he had plenty of time, especially with Vader, to get the points he needed to win, which makes me wonder if trying to kill Vader might be a good idea if I have all the hunter cards ready to put a hole in him~ but then you leave the eJets and eRiots alone for a while..

It's a tough call. I think Vader IS someone who recovers his value later in the rounds, especially if he has a lackluster Round One. On the other hand, taking a hit from an EJet isn't going to kill an ERanger ... though two EJets can do it pretty readily, or an Ejet with Overrun or Grenadier shenanigans. And Vader's a lot of points, and a centerpiece unit: turn Dark Energy and Parting Blow and everything into "mere" Zillo blocks.

The problem with going after Vader is that a lot hinges on his defense dice. If he's putting up 5-6 blocks every time and blocking pierce with Zillo on top of that it's going to be really hard to build up the damage that you need to kill him even if you do focus fire him the whole game. You can get a few decent attacks in with hunter cards but you're still going to be at the mercy of the dice gods as to whether or not you're going to be able to finish him off before the rest of his list runs over you.

That is true, especially if he can hide Vader when he's low on health and you can never get to him then you've wasted it all for nothing

Thanks man. I have to admit, half the time I was admiring the screen. VTTV's broadcast is insanely good for IA. And yes, what a final match! I was so excited to be able to comment. I could not believe how it seemed to flip.
