Clear bases

By Hawkstrike, in Star Wars: Legion

I see some clear Legion bases being sold on Etsy.

Setting aside for a moment the question of whether using clear bases will be tournament legal or not ... how do you think clear bases will look on the table? Better to adapt to different mats or tables, or not as good looking as a painted/flocked base?

To me, clear bases always look like everyone is floating around on glossy hover-discs.

Gamers are blind to the grassland flocked miniatures playing on a snow table or the Desert Camo on your tanks playing on a forest.

I’m going to experiment with anti glare clear bases.

i would love to know if they will be event legal.

Since I'm new to this kinda thing, I'm kind of thinking I'll just paint the bases a solid color to mark a unit. I'm ok with the concept of basing, but since I don't think I'll be held to one landscape, I guess I may well make it functional.

Or eventually think it looks stupid, and I can just do it properly down the road.

They always look like hot garbage. The "I want it to match the table" is definitely a mentality that newer gamers have. I remember thinking this when I started gaming, but anyone who's played these games for more than a hot minute doesn't even begin to care.

Also, this is why I always paint the edge of bases black. The model looks better when there's delineation between it and things around it.

Agree 100% about painting edge of bases black. Would advise it and imo really helps blend any base onto a table.

What about a black table?

Then you're playing on spare X-Wing mats and the specifics of your basing is irrelevant.

I prefer a warm/cold colour that suits the models (either contrast or reinforcement) for the base edge, but yeah, it should be discernible from both the base surface and table.

I would not make a big deal about it. If your afraid that your base is not tournament legal make sure the size and thikness is the same as the base the model is bought with.

Well I wish I hadn't wasted my Saturday making a heavily textured volcanic black Lah'mu mat!

I'm thinking green will be a nice contrast.

I have 3 pots of some very old GW Goblin Green for those times I’m really feeling like painting some obnoxious bases...

Don't forget the green sawdust... er, flock... to glue to the base. Make it super old school.

yep still got a tub of that stuff .... somewhere in a leaking garage.....

One of the main issues I've seen with Clear bases is the clouding that occurs when super glue dries on them. Yes it can be cleaned, but still I'd rather have a base that suits the model when it is on display. I will have to work out a method of marking the arcs on the vehicle bases that I like as it is if I choose to put basing material on the bases.

I tend to agree. I'd far prefer desert bases on an ice world board to clear acrylic.

Wait till the kid gets something at school, THEN you can do some truly obnoxious bases!!

Yes sir, ghastly green and a bio-hazard too.

Lol. I have been modeling for years and I think clear bases can look great.

They are in my opinion best on games played on flat printed mats. So board games and nice neoprene mats. Smushing static grass or moving them on top of heavy textured boards is not great. But on a flat surface they blend nicely.

Agreed....it actually distracts me more from the model than a normal solid base does(which seems odd)

FFG will not let you use aftermarket bases this early in the games product cycle and I (as a player) would frown on it too. How big are the bases? What angle is the front arc of the bikes, scout walker and AT-ST?

too many variables.

@Hidatom if the bases is divided into 90 degree quarters then the arc sizes should still be the same. If the bases are too large it is a bit of an issue as movement is measured front to back so the base adds distance.

But FFG can only post rules for Official Play which would have to be enforced by TOs in order to have any teeth. And for casual play only, it's not like FFG is going to send basing police to confiscate models placed on clear bases. We'll see what the OP rules are in regard to conversions.

where did I mention casual play?
I was CLEARLY talking about what FFG will enforce i.e. official events.
