To bid or not to bid (Imp. Aces)

By Ryuneke, in X-Wing Squad Lists

After so much trial and error in listbuilding (especially with Kylo) I finally found a list I’m really enjoying. But there is one hard decision to make... go for the bid or an upgrade...

Here’s the list:

The Inquisitor (25)
Push the Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)

"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)

"Quickdraw" (29)
Expertise (4)
Fire-Control System (2)
Advanced Optics (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)

Total: 96

The 4pt. bid is strong, especially for Quickdraw. And the other Aces like the bid as well...

What I like about the list is, that my opponent has a tough decision to make who to target first. It’ll be omega leader most of the time.

Nevertheless there are options to consider:

1) Rockets on Inquisitor. Either harpoons or cruise missiles.

Harpoons are super strong, but these will increase total pts. to 100

Cruise missiles can hit hard but are difficult to setup. 1 pt. bid.

2) stealth device or hull upgrade on omega ldr.

Both upgrades give me a 1pt. bid and omega ldr. will last a bit longer on the field. I prefer Stealth Device.

So my question is: is any upgrade worth giving up the strong bid?

I would be glad for suggestions!

Personally, having 1pt bid is enough if I have only PS9/8 ships. Others at that PS often don‘t bid at all because of all the higher PS ships.

So Cruise would be my change. Also I‘d switch AdvOptics with SensorCluster because of Expertise - you will focus anyway, and now you can fine tune the shiled loss better

I always take at least three points if initiative is important for my list, if it’s not just spend up. I’d argue that your list doesn’t care too much...

I prefer adv. optics over sensor cluster because optics give me the chance to barrel roll. And I don’t really see the benefit in sensor cluster. You only use it if you blank out or do I missunderstand something.

I think you guys have a good point when saying 99pts. are enough. But why would you take cruise missiles and not an upgrade for omega ldr.?

Quickdraw wants to lose her shields one by one to maximize the benefit of her ability. Imagine 3 hits vs evade blank blank. You‘d rather spend the focus to lose just 1 shield, right? Or 2 Hits and you roll focus focus blank. Now you can decide to take 1 instead of deciding between 0 and 2 damage.

Personal preference. You might even go with prockets to keep enemy ships at length.

I see OL as a trap in your list, a bait. Keeping her slim is then to your advantage. On the other hand, adding a 4th green means you can use her more aggressively and have her survive anyway. It‘s not clearcut IMO.

I ran at 96 with two PS9's and it didn't do much of anything for me, especially since one of them was Kylo. 99 seems okay for right now.

Prockets on the inquisitor, then he's a threat at ALL ranges. (Range 1, Range 1, and bonus two dice range 1)

Yeah, I don't think any of those ships pilots care that much about a bid.

So sensor cluster it is. Makes perfect sense to me.

And Proton rockets on the Inquisitor.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your suggestions!!

Just one last point: that bit about sensor cluster assumes you have LWF, Expertise and FCS. A Quickdraw with VI and Harpoons prefers (in my opinion) Advanced Optics to improve the alpha.

Have fun with your list, looks pretty cool and strong!

You should stick with Advanced Optics because while a big bid isn't needed, a 99 point bid is. There are plenty of PS 8 ships, and you want to be moving last against them. Especially Miranda---she is much easier to beat if your autothruster ships go last against her.

Proton Rockets on Inquisitor is a good idea in this list, since Inqy is the lowest threat, so might as well put a damage spike on him.

Put prockets on Inky, he LOVES those, especially with his slower speed greens, as opposed to cruises.

I would use Pattern Analyzer on QD. Gets you those focuses more consistently than optics.

But all alternatives also leave him at 99pt?

Played with the list a couple of times and loved it. The opening engagement is a bit tricky...

Sensor Cluster saved QD 2 times and prevented her from unnecessary shield loss.

Prockets are the way to go. Having this huge range 1 threat is really important.
