It's ironic, but it's "Just for clarification"...

These would fare better in imperial assault. I would question a melee only in a large shooting game

Hey, their dumb little tractor beam sticks could be R1, maybe R2.

I suspect though Royal Guards would mostly be a vector for a unit to have the Guardian Keyword (and perhaps a new keyword for melee protection) intrinsically rather than via upgrades.

Is this the first showing of Royal Guards in combat? (Not Praetorian )

You mean units like darth vader and Luke? You're right how dare they put melee troops in this game.

I didnt dare them i just said they would so better in a game more suited for their style. Darth Vader spends most of his time trying to catch a squad so he can throw his ligjt saber not in melee. Vader is points denial but almost every unit in the game can play keep away from melee range.

right up till you play breakthough or intercept the transmissions missions... as they both require you to have units stationary near set points.....

  • breakthrough... unit leaders standing in opponenets deployment zone
  • intercept - most models in range 1 of a token

Besides, the Royal Guard would have the Guardian keyword to help keep Commanders in the game despite being in the midst of the fighting. Besides, in cannon they have heavy blaster pistols under their robes, and are well trained with all sorts of weaponry.
