Changing My Playstyle

By Boba Rick, in X-Wing

Well, I got creamed over the weekend and I have decided to learn, adapt, and overcome!

In the past I have typically favored less-maneuverable ships with extra hit points over high-agility arc-dodgers. I am putting my ARC-170 on the shelf and looking for something that can really move. I am saying goodbye to beautiful, beautiful formation flying.

So, I turn to you more experienced players now! Help me make this transition? I can't bring myself to fly something with less than four hit points, but what about Blackout? Should I switch to Dash/Poe? I would like to try Vynder, but it looks like she gets too expensive very quickly. I am comfortable with three ships.

I have flown Asajj several times, but I am struggling to find two wingmen for her. It seems she goes best with a Firespray or Jumpmaster.

Advise?

tie swarm ought to do the trick.

Edit: no it won't doesn't meet your criteria.

TIE Interceptors, Fighters/FOs, Phantoms, and Silencers.

What about Assajj, Fenn, + whatever? (Pablob gets my vote, but that's because I love Hwks)

Start with Ryad and two other defenders to taste. If you like jousty lists they still hold their own but won't melt immediately.

Ha, I had that in mind when I wrote it! :-D

Don't give up on that Arc yet. You'd be surprised what a couple of Flight Assist Astromechs and action inhibiting attacks can do for their survivability.

Also, two of the PS4 Silencers + Advanced Optics, AT and FCS + A festively plump Quickdraw can put a hurt on things and withstand some abuse in the process.

you should try the low/fenn/norra list out before you completely dump the arc...

But if you're looking to change, you should try dash/poe or yorr/inky/qd or rac+ ace

If you just want something that can move fast and has decent hp then you could try out the gunboat... very fun ship to fly.

GUNBOAT. Always GUNBOAT. Advanced SLAM baby! Talk about moving!

I flew Norra at Omaha and had a blast. Only went 2-4 (don't care though, as i am not a very competitive person) but had a great time and met some cool people. Norra with Rage+Finn is fun when Rau is nearby with M9-G8 and Inspiring Recruit.

Kylo and Rho Squadron gunboats with harpoons. Dash Poe (with BB8 and intensity, it’s so much more fun than VI R2D2!). Rey+1. I’ve stumbled upon Dengar and Boba Fett being surprisingly good too...

The world’s your oyster really.

I was thinking this:

Major Vynder — Alpha-class Star Wing 26
Push the Limit 3
Concussion Missiles 4
Advanced SLAM 2
Os-1 Arsenal Loadout 2
Ship Total: 37
"Countdown" — TIE Striker 20
Stealth Device 3
Adaptive Ailerons 0
Ship Total: 23
Test Pilot "Blackout" — TIE Silencer 31
Veteran Instincts 1
Fire-Control System 2
Advanced Optics 2
Autothrusters 2
First Order Vanguard 2
Ship Total: 40

I have found a niche in a sort of 'in between' the two extremes. I call them 'mobile jousters' or 'arc dodging jousters. I know it sounds weird, but let me lay a few on you:

Quickdraw. Hits heavy, but can arc dodge pretty decently with the roll, but doesn't need to.

Vessery/Ryad: hit hard and can take a beating and the 4k, in a way, is an arc dodge against many ships. Also BR.

Gunboat: Beefy, but slams around the board!

These are just a few suggestions. The point is that I have found that I love ships that can joust, but are pretty mobile and fast if they want to be, or can go slow. You're not as unhittable as Quiz backed by Palp, nor as immobile as Rebel formation flyers. Also, I tend to make each ship in my list function independently if they need to, so no need for a formation.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Looks like my kind of list! I love Countdown, so my one suggestion is go for hull instead of sd. I know you don't get hit, but the possibility of one more trigger on his ability is pretty awesome.

Are you trying to win tournaments or are you playing casual and just out to have fun?

Personally, I have a ton of fun with a PS1 Quadjumper to tractor beam everything it can before spectacularly exploding, two Scyk's (usually Inaldra and Quinn) to hit and run, and then someone like Fenn to actually be a real threat. But I play for fun.

I'll echo @FlyingAnchors 's suggestion of Ventress, Fenn, and Palob. Fun trio with some varying styles of fly that are fun. If you really want to tank up Ventress though, I'd go with something cheaper than Palob, like a Heavy Sunny with Linked Battery.

I also think @SirCormac 's suggestion of going for a kind of in between play style could be beneficial. The TIE/sf (and QD in particular) is a lot of fun to fly and gives a cool balance between jousting and acing.

You mentioned Dash/Poe, which is also a solid choice.

Where I've been staying, I've got a recent friend who flew a PTL/OS-1/AdvS/Harpoon/Proton Rocket Vynder along side a Palp shuttle and Inquisitor, went 3-1 with 15 players. Vynder seems pretty cool. His biggest issue is the Palp Shuttle seemed a little superfluous, and mostly just ate shots. He's frequently been flying Inquisitor/RAC+Kylo, so there were reasons to Palp for crits offensively. With the Inquisitor shooting after Vynder, and unable to proc Harpoons in the same round, Palp doesn't seem as impactful as when trying to activate Kylo's condition.

Where I normally live, I've got another friend who asserts he almost thinks Blackout is a better pilot than Kylo, with only the PS difference being relevant. He flies the PTL/AdvS/AdvO like might be seen on Kylo. The agility reduction on a ship which can easily dodge out from behind asteroids seems pretty solid. I feel like that'd be a lot of fun to play around with.

Anyhow, biggest thing is probably just fly stuff and hate it. That's how you figure out what you should be flying. I eventually figured out I was really bad with K-Wings and I've been doing a lot better since.

Dude, if you love formation flying, try this one! These guys are like Rebel formation fliers, but instead they're the good guys! And they've got more punch, more evades, more hits, and then once the joust is over, they break formation and scramble all over the place SLAMming and Flechetting, with the ever-spicy Lieutenant Wasabi making eyes water with his blisteringly hot SLAM -> HLC shots!!!

+1

My favourite 'for fun' list atm is...

Vader- x1, predator, ATC

Backdraft- Spec Ops, LWF, FCS, VI

Vessery- x7, Juke

Compromising on all 3 to fit them in. Vader without EU makes me slightly sad. Obvious concessions on Backdraft. I prefer Vess with a couple more points of upgrade- TIE/Expertise...

I am running it tonight against Mrs. Rick who will be flying Lothal Rebel, FCS, Hera, Ezra / Lowrick with Expertise / Jess with Chopper, IA, and Primed Thrusters.

I've had a lot of luck with TIE Defenders and the TIE/D title. They're expensive, but they hit hard, and hit twice. And, with Expertise, the focus token can be used solely for defense.

That is a nasty list. I like it.

If you really want to change your play style, I'd suggest flying Strikers. Your mind-set changes quickly when you've got no shields and crazy flight patterns.

Having said that, if you want to be a bit more survivable, I'd go with the TIE/sf, Defender and/or Inquisitor.

Here's a list i picked up from @wurms some time ago:

Colonel Vessery (35)
Elusiveness (2)
TIE/x7 (-2)

The Inquisitor (25)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)

"Backdraft" (27)
Swarm Leader (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
Advanced Optics (2)
Lightweight Frame (2)
Special Ops Training (0)

It's fun, deals damage & can go the distance longer than I deserve.
