Should all Small Ships come in 2-packs?

By Crabbok, in Star Wars: Armada

I think the Hammerhead distribution method was great. Curious if you guys would prefer small ships to be sold in packs of 2 moving forward?

Or,

What cases would best suit something like that? When a small ship costs below 50 points? Would a Carrion Spike be better suited to a solo pack? Would the Arquitens have worked better as a double pack?

Would certain medium ships work well as a double pack? (I'm looking at YOU Katana Fleet!)

Do I get double upgrades and will FFG half the packaging?

Unless they are specifically meant to be run in multiples with task force titles, I highly doubt it.

I like how they packaged the Hammerheads. They are ships that are designed to work in multiples, and as such, it feels like you'd have to own at least two in order to get the full effect of the ship. But with that said, I don't see the reason that the Raider should come in a double pack at double the price, or the CR-90 or other ships. Plus FFG probably makes more profit on the single packs as they can ship more in the same box.

From now I would like to see small ships that we see multiples of on screen, such as the Dornean Gunships, packed in doubles.

Everyone will buy more then one of those anyways.

If the vessel is as you said hyper specific in purpose such as the Carrion Spike, then one per package is fine.

From a consumer-facing standpoint, there's no benefit. The more discretely you can shop, the better - if you want 3 or 5 Hammerheads, you have to pay for 4 or 6, which sucks. If you want a copy of External Racks, you have to pay for two, which sucks.

However, there are plenty of reasons on the business end that might exist - maybe it saves money on shipping/packaging and so reduces per-ship cost, maybe it leads to higher margins/revenue giving FFG more money to plow back into future Armada content, maybe it saves retailer shelf space, maybe it increases customers' perceived value of the box, etcetc. If doubling up makes the boxes cheaper per-ship, or saves FFG money so they can afford more and better things, then that could be well worthwhile.

But while any number of behind-the-scenes advantages probably exist, unless somebody who was involved in FFG's decision-making randomly violates all business norms and shows how the sausage was made, we won't know exactly what those are.

Worth noting, I think it would reduce impulse buys on small ships. Now, other than the Hammerheads, it is not too hard of a sell to throw a single small ship blister pack, that you may have been on the fence to to get, into your purchase. I don't really see it doing anything on the consumer end except reducing sales. It may save FFG on the packaging end, but it also takes up the same amount of space as the individual blister packs, but is going to be purchased at least half as much in the double pack.

As for Multi-ship packs going forward. If they threw in a scenario, looking at you Katana Dreadnoughts, I can see an excuse to go as many as 3 per box.

I don’t want the only way to access ships be a box almost the price of a core set...

Honestly, I just wish they make an economy version of each release to be sold separately. I'll tell you what I don't need. More small bases, speed dials, command dials, command tokens, objective tokens, victory tokens, ship markers, ship numbers...

With small ships, if they just did an economy version for "whatever is still profitable" % off with ship token, ship card, model, and upgrades I'd be stoked.

I bough 4+ of the kitten, raider, and mc30 Plus an average of 2 of each other model... I'm freakin' full up on some of these parts. It feels so wasteful dumping them in a plastic bin, never to be assembled or used.

I think all of us have an "Armada junk box" in the garage full to the brim with unpunched cards from the last 3 or so waves haha. I know I have probably 4-5 small bases unassembled still in the bag bases as well.

You are gonna be so unhappy when the Executor comes out....

I would prefer that they stick with one ship per package. I have built — but not flown — several fleets with three Hammerheads but none with four. I really want to buy a third Hammerhead, but I have been reluctant to because I don't feel like I need four.

At this point everyone should more or less know it's when haha Something big? Followed by 6mo wait? Cmon FFG!

Definitely when. Too much evidence points to it coming out. Too much money left on the table if they don't.

There should be some kind of price reduction when ships are released as multiples (usually this happens as the result of less packaging). $34.99 would have been appropriate I think. This game can get kind of expensive the further into it one goes.

All games are like that. ?

Too much evidence for an SSD two-pack?

That seems rather excessive :P

Man, have you seen how much it costs to try to compete at a high chess level?

... the further one goes into it, the more expensive it gets.

This, I will concede. Especially when you reach master.....

What the heck??

The huge majority of that box is complete air. Which FFG uses box size to give an illusion of getting more. Its the most wasteful packaging and space use (shipping costs fuel) there is.

Realistically it is the same cost as two small blisters but for larger volume and it still feels like a rip off.

Do you have the data on the volume of empty space in two single blisters vs the single larger double pack?

So, I teach Env Sci and I usually cover an activity on packaging waste. In the past I've used bulk vs snack pack raisins. May be I could use this to justify buying even more Hammerheads....ya know, for science.
