Really confused how fleet command upgrades work.

By Sophiearcher, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

They look interesting but, im new to the game so im struggling to see how to best use them, as i see people talking about using/activatingsquadrons on a pelta with all fighters follow me, but that would require having the dial and then having a token to use all fighters wouldnt it?

I feel like i am massively missing something, as in my mind you would need to keep using the same command to ensure you have the appropiate token so you can use the fleet card next turn? or am i massively messing up the order of operations or something?

At the start phase... so before the 1st ship activates you can spend either the corresponding token* that's on the ship that has the upgrade OR discard the upgrade card to gain its effects during that turns ship activation phase.

So its planning the turn before to make sure the Pelta has a sqn token on it.

*eg sqn for all fighters follow me

Thats how i thought it worked, i guess the bit i was missing was some upgrade (like raymus antilles)

But for example a stock pelta with the fighter fleet upgrade if it wanted to use it every turn would need to reveal a squadron dial, Bank the token, and then use that token NEXT turn?

So it wouldnt be able to use the bonus turn 1 unless it got a token before the ship phase externally some how? (not that you need to, but this question will help my understanding of the card a bit more)

Correct so only the Imperials (Tarkin as Admiral) can use a fleet upgrade turn 1) at the moment, unless you are discarding it.

EDIT - Rebs can with Garm... and both sides have HONDO... thanks Tokra for pointing them out!

So yes if you want to use the Fleet upgrade every Rebel turn you need one of the following....

a) have that dial the turn before

b) use Raymus

c) use Ashoka

d) use coms net off a GR75.

If its some thing like shields to max or fighter follow me that you'll only want to use twice you can use a token to activate one turn & then the next discard it.

Thanks very much!

Tarkin and Garm Bel Iblis can give the ship a token at the start of the round. Hondo can give out tokens at the start of the ship phase. You can use these tokens for the Fleet Upgrade in the first round.

But basically you are right. If you have no external sources for the tokens, you have to reveal the dial, bank the token, and use the token in the next round.

This is why these fleets have always external sources for the Tokens (Raymus, Comms Net, Hondo, Aresko, Yularen, ...).

Aye i can see how pushing tokens onto it externally can be sueful (especialy on a squadron pelta for example) I just wanted to make sure i was understanding exactly how the fleet command thing functioned before building around it.

Either way tyvm :3

arghh... forgot about Garm & Hondo :(

Also take into account that another way to trigger the fleet command upgrades are discarding them. So when you plan to use them for the last time during the battle you don't need a token, or if you have it you can keep it to use it for the corresponding command.

Veteran ships in CC can do it turn 1 too. * Getting Veteran on your Pelta (or presumably Chimaera/ISDC) early in CC is really good.

*edit: ignore this part, I'm dumb and wrong. Doesn't change the second part though. :)

Sorry to disappoint you but they can't. With the veteran token, they can gain the command token when they reveal a command, but to trigger the fleet command they need to have it by the start of the ship phase.

Durr, you're right. Fix't. :)

Its also why the pelta comes with Ashoka and the Phoenix Home title to increase the token flexibility to get those fleet commands off
