It is possible to start playing without starter set?

By NairoD, in Star Wars: Legion

Hi all

My friend asked me today is it possible to start playing without starter set?

I wasnt sure and say no. But does I was right?

Well, you could if the other player has the starter set or you buy the dice, movement tools and range finder separately. But you would miss out on Luke and Vader because they are not sold separately (at least not now)

Hmm

For now there is Leia and Imperial commander (forget his name) spoiled. So I was wrong..

**** for my incompetence. Have to convice him to return to the idea of starting Legion now!

Mind you, Leia and Veers will be released later this year. They are not part of the initial launch of the game! (Same goes for Snowtroopers and Rebel Fleet troopers)

Rules are a free dl, you can buy the dice and range ruler separately.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see half core and mini sets go up on ebay in spades, although your friend might have to proxy upgrade cards depending on sources

If you have access to templates and dice from elsewhere then sure you don't need the starter once veers and Leia are out.

But hot dam for the price of the starter its a solid investment for anyone wanting to play.

Command cards dont come anywhere other than Core set right?

Not the 4 basic ones. The other 4 should come with vader (if split from a core) or veers as they are useless without the model

I don't think the command cards are available separately and you have to have Standing Orders.

with the amount of people buying two cores, I'm pretty sure you could buy Luke or vader with cards online at a reasonable price.

But the core is such a steal i'm not sure why you wouldnt want it.

You gave your friend the best answer. Buying just one faction’s units from the core + dice + maneuver templates is 105 retail just for those things that are available, versus 90 for the core. And without the core you don’t have a commander, command cards, tokens, barricades, upgrades, etc.

Yes you can, but the core is the best bang for its buck. I guess you can print the dice out on cardboard and roll those:D

Other options include creating a conversion chart for standard d8s or d6s, buying 1+ dice pack(s) for $15, or probably buying a dice rolling app.

Not just Standing Orders, you need 7 cards. If you are only using 1 Commander, you need the full set of all four generic Command Cards. If you had two Commanders and used all the exclusive cards for each of them, then you would only need Standing Orders.

NOPE.

Straight up, the core set is a huge value. Just 4 infantry units are $100, which you get in the core. With that said this ^

You'll be able to ebay Luke and Vader plus the cards soon enough. If they don't want the full core, they could buy one core and split it with someone to get all rebel or imp.

but with the need for more troopers, I don't see why you wouldn't buy 2 cores and split and sell off the faction you don't want. Unless you are strictly forbidden from running Rt or speeder bikes, or feel the desperate for impact grenades.
