Citadel metallics are probably the best out there, but otherwise? Shop around... craft paints are great for drybrushing, P3 white is quite good, magic wash (50/50 floor wax future shine/isopropyl alcohol and India ink) is useful. Beyond that the world is your oyster.

Better for protection? They both protect equally, there is not advantage to using one or the other, they are the same, neither is better.

I agree. I have never found other metallics to compare to Citadel. I find their washes and glazes very convenient, otherwise I almost exclusively use Vallejo.
