I am planning on mixing some black or dark blue with the luftwaffe gray. Mainly because I happen to have a bottle of it!
Painting rebels
I might use dark reaper, then nuln oil maybe with a small amount of drakenhof nightshade mixed in. Add in a medium grey for highlights, maybe thunderhawk blue as an alternative.
My thought with rebels was to make it look like each squad was pulled in from a different area/planet, so one woodland unit and one desert unit from the core maybe, one in civvies or something, I don't want them to look to organised now. Then again, I'll be painting Stormtroopers first, so I might change my mind again.

Tamiya AS-8 U.S. Navy Blue over a grey primer IS that hue of blue.
I used it on the pilots for my T-47 kit. Given that I had a plan to paint my rebels in the R1 gear, have tested a number of blues over white, grey and black primer. By accident uncovered Tamiya AS-8 is that color.
I'm waffling between Multicam (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) and Vietnam-era Tigerstripe.
Some general camo advice that it took me way too long to figure out: Highlight all the camo aspects with a bone or bone equivalent off-white color. It may seem weird to highlight an amalgamation of colors with a single color, but it works and gives that aspect of the uniform a cohesive feel despite the color variety.
@MasterShake2 thanks. Sounds like a decent tip.

I think I'm going to go with something pretty similar to this as well. I want to try and do several different skin tones, including some if the near human aliens.
pretty good video that uses the "desert" theme we see on the box...the red helmet band is still a little weird to me...red/brown I can see but most videos are going pretty straight red.
for more detail about the painting...what goes where.
I assume most of us will be doing 3-4 colors...what will "match" on your uniform?
I am thinking of doing the gaters, hat and possible the gloves the same color but it looks like the hat and pants are sometimes the matching color...what do people think?

Check this out.
Camo is easy enough. Deconstruction of a camo pattern and the individual colors equally simply. An accent color that may work well with you not as easy.
I found this on Saturday, while doing some research on color combos.
Thank you Dash Two, not exactly my issue. I KNOW what colors I plan to use just wondering how people will paint the different parts of the uniform.
Do you mind talking about your plan for your rebels paint scheme?

Avid hunter and own every camo pattern known. I found a few I really like. Took them apart by individual color and, then, used the color wheel I sent to help sort out what goes with what.
This photo represents the colors I am using for my Rebels.
My own color created chart, which is in my New Guy thread, indicated I am looking at Iraqi Sand, Flat Tan, Brown, several hues of grey, grey black and, then, yellow ranging from desert yellow to dark yellow (German WWII).
Then, I used the conversion chart (first link) to understand what Vallejo Colors I had that equalled Citadel colors.
Next, I used the Citadel Color chart. They have one that is extensive. It shows all their base/wash/layer/highlight combos. This allowed me to see what colored primer to pair with what colored base coat to get my desired yellow and or beige/bone.
Of course, each color changes a little with a primer. Did some test runs on plastic. Now, I am on a series of test IA models.
Ended up getting Army Painter Dark Yellow and Skeleton Bone. The Dark Yellow IS the German WWII desert shade. Too dark and not what I want. Skeleton Bone ends up between khaki and G Camo Biege/Ushati Bone. Exactly what I want and will speed up painting on some of the troops.
I have settled on all web gear being flat tan, leather brown and or a grey black/black grey. Gloves and, potentially, gaiters match.
Backpacks also in a tan, brown, grey to neutral grey to dark grey
Weapons more black then grey
Boots ... undecided on Olive Drab; leather brown or a grey. Will vary based on web gear.
Gloves ... same. Varied.
Fatigues ... I am going to alternate. Some with a standard desert yellow and no camo. Either a black or dark, dark brown, then, Averland Sunset; covered with Desert Yellow and, then, Sepia wash. Finally, highlighted. Jackets and shirt a mix of this yellow combo; U'Bone or I Sand; greys
Helmet ... this is where the complimentary color may go. Talking the large, metal ring. Based on that interactive color wheel I know I can use a blue, if I want, or I may opt for a dark, dark grey. A hue of purple is also an option but not under consideration
Alternate Fatigues ... new painter is going to try out camo. Using Skeleton Bone primer and, then, Sorastro's method to create a camo pattern with flat brown; a peach/tan; a light grey and dark grey. Highlighted Iraqi Sand / White
I cannot paint 21-28 identical figures. I will get bored. Thus, I need a mix & max.
I plan on each 7 man unit to have the leader painted a certain way. Then, a set of 2 painted in a manner that their bottoms pant/top shirts jackets are opposite. Repeat that over an additional set of 2. Then, 2 more. Makes up 7. Applying this to the yellow fatigues.
My bone colored/camo guys will just have variance in gloves, web gear ... subtle ... or a few camo'd pants with solid tops.
Here is the thing about camo ... a desert unit having yellow bottoms and a light blue/grey top .... makes total sense. Logically, the darker colors closer to the earth and, then, lighter as you go up. Speaking factually, as it is rare I wear 100% of the same pattern from top to bottom. Thus, applying this to my camo'd out guys.
When I get my last Rebel Troop IA and Duro IA guys one, will post pics.
Awesome, detailed response THANK YOU!
Army painter uses primers that are "!00% color match" if that helps at all...I will probably be using one of the Wal-Mart camo sprays for the primer (Or Vallejo paint on Primer).
I probably won't try Camo due to the number of figures I need to get ready but I will mix up the color schemes on some troopers (Coyote brown seems like a good color for the female soldier wearing the "Jumpsuit") with at least one trooper wearing the dark blue vest or jacket we see in Rogue one.
I REALLY, REALLY like Army painter's "Military shader" so I am leaning toward doing greens with tan, brown and grey as accent colors.
(I had the IA rangers painted in Vallejo's USA Olive Drab pants and it looked BORING, but then I shaded it with the military shader and it looked great)
How many of you are painting all of your squads using the same colour scheme? I thinking of painting all of my rebel squads using different colour schemes for easy identification and wondering if I’m in the minority.

I'm planning on painting my squads so some will match and some won't (e.g. a few squads with brown/green outfit for Rebels, a few squads that are gray/blue). My plain for identifying which mini goes with which unit is to paint the sides of the base. That way I/my opponent can tell that all the troopers with the same color are part of a unit, in case they get all mashed up in play or something.

I liked the uniform mix of the troops in Rogue One. Up till then the ROTJ uniforms were always very cool.
I’m thinking these grunts have seen the life on many worlds and are lucky to have the gear they do. Earth tones and basic gear colors is what I will go for.
New article with some basic advice on painting and a rebel trooper as an example (I think this was the model painted by BoLS bases on the top of the hat matching the armored rim)

well I have started painting my rebels and have my first 2 squads about 75% done...I went a little too far with making each trooper unique and won't be doing that for my other 3 squads.
from now on I am doing a colored primer (green, tan or brown) and then use the primer color for at least one piece of the uniform to speed up painting.
anybody want to post there completed squads here?

Had thrown this up in my New Guy thread. There is a write-up with colors and lessons learned. One of which being trying to paint 21-30 different minis in a mismatch of colors ... like, completely different ... unrealistic. Unless you have unlimited time to paint.
He is minus any shading
i've decided im going to buy rebels since 4 of the 6 people ive seen want the game will only play imps (ugh...lol...)
However i'm seriously torn between two themes. Basing/terrain is more enjoyable to me than painting the minis, and all the terrain we have access to are either lame barricades or definitely-not-for-this-game terrain (40k), so i want to make terrain to follow suit with my rebels.
I'm torn between an Endor theme (jungles, camo, lots of tight spaces terrain) or Hoth theme (wide open, trench warfare, mostly white).
Hoth reasons: I love white aesthetics and the whole Hoth scene is still my favorite thing of the original trilogy, i would have a blast recreating it. Problem, WHITE IS HARD and thats a lot of white lol. Also we have no mats that would work with a snow battlefield so i'd have to order one.
Endor reasons: I'm also a bit of a nature nut, i love jungle or amazon documentaries and again i think i'd have a blast trying to create a forest ecosystem board, and i also already have a grassy 3x6 mat anyway. Problem, camo....ew....i hate camo more than white lol (but camo only on parts of the model, while white would be the ENTIRE BATTLEFIELD)
i havnt actually purchased anything yet so i still have time to decide but seriously this is a hard decision lol
Part of me wants to just do straight up Endor troopers (they are my favorite), however I may also just paint them similar to my Bolt Action Us marines.
The old battlefront 2 also had urban style troopers (specifically I remember on the Polis Massa map), that I think would look really good on the table as well.
As for the AT-RT I want to do a rusted 501st walker, but I am also tempted to woodland camouflage the thing.
so many options, so few minis.
(I may do a squad of each, and I plan to run multiple at-rts in the future).
Oh and Luke depends on the rest of my army. I may throw a pancho over him and make him ROTJ, or I could green stuff the pilot pieces on him and put him in his orange jumpsuit. I am also considering glueing a lego brick to his back so master Yoda can hitch a ride.

I like the look of the Scarif Rebels. That khaki, navy and olive drab mishmash with some yellow every once in a while.
pretty useful video here of the BF2 uniforms

Love those and was my initial plan
However, I am convinced those troops arrive at a later date via expansion. Holding off.
