Backstory for your Army

By Big Easy, in Star Wars: Legion

Look, there's no games to play and no minis to paint, and you might be a little terrain-ed out, so I hope there's room for a little fluff. To that end, I have named all of the minis in a full 6-squad army and given a bit of backstory for each. This is my first TT wargame, so I don't know how common this is already. I'm hoping this will add a bit of immersion and investment in my armies as actual rebels rather than chess pieces, making the game that much more real (because let's face it--we wouldn't be spending all this time making terrain, boards, painting minis if we didn't want a fair degree of immersion). I don't expect most people will go this far, but I made a backstory for my entire army. Here is a summary, but I've got a good bit more on the squad level as well!

"Santhar Squad was instrumental in the Battle of Taul and the subsequent evacuation, as well as the Skirmish at Taul (aka Second Battle of Taul). Following the skirmish, the seasoned Santhar Squad was expanded to Santhar Company and filled out with fresh Rebel recruits as well as a a few veterans from other units depleted by the Battle of Taul.

Santhar Squad was originally led by Maximian Ajax, but following his death in the Battle of Taul Lt. Tagge Krupp assumed command and was promoted to Captain. Along with his good friend Fein Lavar, known by his squad as “Rathtar,” Captain Krupp set about organizing his company into squads of disciplined and highly-trained Rebel troopers.

The original surviving members of Santhar Squad became officers and NCO squad leaders in the new Santhar Company, including: Sgt. Leir “Iceman” Kim, the uncannily calm Duros; Sgt. Jost Payne, the seasoned career soldier; Lt. Hobin Manus, the young officer that bravely held off wave after wave of stormtroopers during the evacuation of Taul; Sgt. Merisee “Mercy” Sallaros, who single-handedly rescued a squad of suppressed Rebels during the second Battle of Taul; and Lt. Cal Wren, known for his quiet tactical genius.

Since forming, Santhar Company has helped the Rebel Alliance secure numerous strongholds and resources, and has worked closely with Bandit Platoon (AT-RTs), Nighthawks Squad (Fleet Troopers), and Rogue Squadron (T-47 close air support) as a unified battle group across the Outer Rim codenamed Renegade Group. When a mission is crucial or survival is in doubt, the Generals of the Alliance regularly call on Renegade to get the job done."

Here's a sample of the squad level fluff. I won't bore you with the rest since it's basically for my own benefit. :)

"Santhar One is led by Lt. Hobin Manus. Santhar One is known as one of the most hardened and deadly squads in Santhar Company, led by the young Lt. Manus’ example. Sgt. Rafe Khan helps set the tone for the younger squad members, and the reverence he and Sgt. Kellen “Hardmore” Ardmore have for the much younger Lt. Manus is a testament to the faith they have in their squad leader. Special weapons are handled by Cpl Daina “DC” Corliss, who lost a brother on Scarif and has sworn to avenge him. Heavy weapons are handled by Pfc Dev Youngblood, a brash young Corellian only 19 years old who frequently runs afoul of Khan and Hardmore’s good side. Pfc Lum “Lula” Laamlin is a newer recruit who is eager to prove his worth under the leadership of the famed Lt. Manus. Pvt Ryssa Cody is the newest member of the squad."

I would highly recommend you try out a skirmish scale (5-10 models) campaign based wargame - something like Frostgrave or Dracula's America or Necromunda. It sounds like your cup of tea.

I drafted something a while ago, but lost it. Mine is the 716th Enforcement Regiment. A unit stationed to the far outer rim, who have let tactical efficiency breach some of the military standard (ie - my speeder bike troopers will not be just flat white like you see on Endor). They’ll be operating out of a dense forest world with some muddy terrain in places for now.

I really like that justification to depart from the standard uniforms!

"Something-Something-Crashed CR-90B into-Random Object..."

-The backstory for why I include Fleet Troopers in ground battles.

I think this is very cool and would be great if you add some of the interesting moments that happen in your gameplay to their story as a developing epic of sorts.

"Oh great, now we're not even CLOSE to in camoflauge..." :D

Thanks, that's my plan, especially with the rookies (extra trooper upgrade) for whom I included no backstory for at all. Let's see how they distinguish themselves!!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

STAR WARS

The deadly IMPERIAL ARMY amasses on the field of battle! Across the war torn field, a squadron of troops from the REBEL ALLIANCE marshals their forces. Lead into the fray by DARTH VADER and LUKE SKYWALKER, all warriors involved wonder why their armor is so questionably painted, why their weapons seem to reflect light in a static way, unaffected by the sun, and o sweet lord in a handbag, what is wrong with their skin? WHAT CRUEL GOD MADE THEM THIS WAY? DID DAVID CRONENBERG DIRECT THIS BATTLE? THIS FRANCHISE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, BUT EVERYONE’S EYES ARE PAINTED SHUT! HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO SEE? IS THIS MEANT TO BE COMMENTARY ON THE FUTILITY OF WAR? I JUST WANTED TO PEW PEW PEW! AND THE DICE! WHERE ARE ALL THE DICE?!?!?!

Ahem.

They're all force wielders, using the force to aim their weapons.

They've all got their eyes closed to so they can show off to everyone that they can aim blind, but don't realise that everyone else is doing the exact same thing.

If a repulsor vehicle pilot is getting muddy, they are doing something very wrong.

Sorry, that was more the basing than anything.

I am inspired from the kashyyyk scenes of Ep3 to paint on some greens like a camouflage for the support units or the eventual special forces. Grunt troopers will still be relatively close to standard

I have writte an 20 page backstory which I insist to read to my opponent before combat in the hope he might concede out of boredom and I get a win!!

If there was some custom commander that would be great...

For now battle inspired backstory only.

Only one mini out of the whole army has a name! But hey, to each their own.

My idea right now is to base my Rebel cell out of Telos IV. Down the road I am thinking about running a campaign for my group based around the Kwymar Suppressions.

As a follow-up to this post, I found in my first game that naming all of your troops and having them run into melee with Vader is a bit like naming your Thanksgiving turkey.

20 pages? Filthy casual.

*Brings Leia and 710 points worth of Fleet Troopers.*

The army encounters Darth Vader. 710 points of Fleet Troopers immediately panic and flee the battle / die terrible deaths at Vader's hands. Leia flies away.

I call it a tie.
