Crimson Specialist makes the Cut at the 2018 Seattle Regional

By Kleeg005, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Buy this time, I'd started to get a feel for a sort of standard starting placement, and a standard order of engagement. It only took something like forty games, including six intense rounds of Swiss. Maybe I'm not such a fast learner? But I was back for a second day, mostly awake, and absolutely happy to play as many games as I could.

Top 32: Justin Clapper

Okay, wow. So some things are coming back as I type. Justin had triple Wookies: Lowhhrick and two Liberators(?). They went onto the board in formation on my left. I set the Specialist to joust, Ezra far right(?), and Nym more or less centered. I threw the Specialist forward turn one, then Trajectoried a Proton Bomb (which Nym held) and stopped on turn two. Next turn, the Specialist Trajectoried a second Proton Bomb on top of the first and moved slowly to clear his stress. The Wookiees caught both Protons, although Lowhhrick was safe. Both Wookiees took Blinded Pilot in a stroke of - for me - amazing luck, as the Specialist would have eaten two range-one attacks otherwise. And I think the Deflective Plating must have held; definitely for the first bomb, and maybe for the second, too. After this huge moment, i don't really recall anything. I see that the game ended 100/0, and that's all I have.

Top 16: Doug Stone-Weaver

This list is on List Juggler, so I won't go into detail. It was Asajj/Scout - the basic one that was pretty much everywhere for Scum. I recall the Scout went down in the middle, and that I set the Specialist more or less opposite it, maybe a little to my right. I think Ezra went into the right corner? Asajj went on my far left, and I put Nym between her and the Scout on my side??? The Specialist banked in, the Scout banked toward the left edge, Asajj blasted forward, and Nym Trajectoried and held and turned away. The Scout continued towards that left edge, the Specialist moved for an intercept, Asajj blasted forward again, and Nym turned back in. Bombs went off, with Asajj taking a Direct Hit from a Proton Bomb, and having her shields stripped by a Bomblet and Sabine. Half points on Asajj before the first shots were fired! Of course, after this crazy start, I have zero recall. I see that I won 100/41, which means I lost Nym. But more than that I cannot say. The day continued to get more surreal for me with every game that passed. Oh, and Stress Tokens!

Top 8: Travis Wooldridge

Travis was not happy to see bombers lining up across from him. He had the more or less standard Yorr-driven Palpmobile, Expertise QD, standard Inquisitor. Palp and QD dropped in the right corner, Inq went in the left. I put the Specialist center right to threaten the castle, and Nym and Ezra I think went more left to try to take out the Inquisitor as fast as possible. Yorr suffered a series of bumps and Proton Bombs from the Specialist, to be finished off by Ezra sitting on his tail and keeping him stressed and locked down. Travis had a relatively early and tragic misplay, slooping QD and then forgetting the stress and dialing in a bank that dropped her, stress intact, in front of a debris cloud. She didn't last much past that. But the Inquisitor hung on for a very long time. The game ended with a dead Specialist, Ezra on two hull, and Nym on one versus a one hull TAP. I don't exactly remember, but I think it was a lucky TLT for the finish? At any rate, a 100/36 win, and sparkling dice! Woot!

Top 4: Gordon Pinkerton

Gordon was rolling with Rey/Lowhhrick. I once more have practically zero recall of this game. Everything about the situation was too surreal. I'm sure I put the Specialist more or less centered, and probably set Nym down on the side away from wherever Gordon dropped his ships. This had become my standard placement by this point. This game was also to be recorded, but the computer crashed and the whole thing was lost. C'est la vie, right? Rey was my primary target, if I remember correctly. I'm sure I lost the Specialist to all those huge Expertise Rey hits, but he must have dropped some decent bombs along the way, as I pulled out the win. Oh, and templates! Sweet!

Final: Justin Oden

Well, we all know how this went. I deviated from the plan, made mistakes all over, and got my *** handed to me by a very capable player and his murderous list.

My opponents on Day Two were all very cool, and mostly not too salty about facing a bunch of bombing nonsense. Again, the folks from Uncle's Games ran a fantastic show, and the prize support from Push The Limit LED was amazing! Thanks again to everyone who contributed and played in this tournament! You are all the reason with this Filthy Casual came out to a massively competitive event with a janky bombing list and a dream.

The List Juggler for the tournament, since I didn't write anything down day-of:

Nice wins!!! Like seeing Crim do good!

Any match videos?

Did you face any alpha strike lists?

I recently made a similar Ezra/Nym/Crim list, but fear alpha strikes can take Crimson out in two rounds (my scum alpha will take a bomber out in a single round) or if Nym goes down too quick, it will be game over versus many lists.

Like the proton bomb approach of your list. I had bomblets on crimson and thermals/ions + EM on Nym. Only one game in with it, but barely pulled out the win versus Poe/Fenn/Lowhhrick.

Protons seem really nasty. Good job!

Thanks! Yes, Protons really can get a lot of work done.

I did face a nasty alpha strike list. First Round of Swiss, Wes/Cracken/Nym with Plasma and 'Poons. And it was recorded.

Absolute nailbiter. First round nerves, still not sure about how to play the list to best advantage, etc., etc. And Round Two was a win versus QuickPoons. Not quite exactly alpha, but still a nasty strike.

I think what I enjoyed most about playing the list was the extra layers of planning involved in bomb-placement. On the one hand, it can be very reactive with Nym at PS10 and the Specialist placing so very flexibly. But on the other hand, I still needed to try to outguess my opponents as far in advance as possible to compensate for the Specilaist's rather restricted dial - and I liked that exercise. The best match for that kind of craziness was probably Round Four of Swiss, where Bradley had a Nym and a Ten Numb, both toting Protons and Trajectory Simulators. It was ridiculous. Four TrajSims, as many as five Protons detonating at once? Bwahahahaha!
