Creating a Rebel Squadron Learning List

By TaeSWXW, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Alright, so I didn't get into Worlds so that means I've got at least 6 months of listless Armada playing I need to battle by forcing myself to finally learn how to fly Rebel squadrons (let's be honest, Imperial squadrons are #easymode). If I'm going to learn how to do Rebel squadrons correctly that also means learning how to use Yavaris so let's have that be the cornerstone of this list and since there's no reason to half-*** it so let's throw on Fighter Coordination Team and Flight Commander:

  • Neb B Escort (57)
    • Yavaris (5)
    • Flight Commander (3)
    • Fighter Coordination Team (3)
      • Total: 68

... and might as well have a pair of (starting) GR-75's for our good friends Toryn and Adar:

  • GR-75 Medium (18)
    • Bright Hope (2)
    • Toryn Farr (7)
      • Total: 27
  • GR-75 Medium (18)
    • Adar Tallon (10)
    • Bomber Command Center (8)
    • Boosted Comms (4)
      • Total: 40

Toryn gets Bright Hope because she's gonna have to be in the scrum while Adar gets the ritzy transport because we've gotta keep him and the BCC out of harms way. We're sitting at 135/400 points.

Let's move on to squadrons. Every good Rebel squadron list starts with Jan (from what I've observed):

  • Jan Ors (19)

... and Biggs to keep her alive:

  • Jan Ors (19)
  • Biggs Darklighter (19)
    • Total: 38

... Biggs will need some Escort friends to shunt damage to but I don't want to deal with any more speed-2 ships than necessary so let's start with 2 generic X-Wings:

  • Jan Ors (19)
  • Biggs Darklighter (19)
  • X-Wing (13)x2
    • Total: 64

I want this list to pack some anti-ship punch so let's throw in a pair of B-Wings that'll ride on Yavaris' FCT. Let's say Ten Numb for the additional anti-squadron utility and Dagger for the same reason:

  • Jan Ors (19)
  • Biggs Darklighter (19)
  • X-Wing (13)x2
  • Ten Numb (19)
  • Dagger Squadron (15)
    • Total: 98

Since Yavaris can potentially double tap with three ships I think it's worth finding another squadron or two with a really good ability to spam, let's start with Luke:

  • Jan Ors (19)
  • Biggs Darklighter (19)
  • X-Wing (13)x2
  • Ten Numb (19)
  • Dagger Squadron (15)
  • Luke Skywalker (20)
    • Total: 118

... this leaves us with just 16 points though. My first thoughts are Tycho, Dutch, Gold Squadron, or another X-Wing. I'm gonna' go for Gold:

  • Jan Ors (19)
  • Biggs Darklighter (19)
  • X-Wing (13)x2
  • Ten Numb (19)
  • Dagger Squadron (15)
  • Luke Skywalker (20)
  • Gold Squadron (12)
    • Total: 130

We'ere now sitting at 265/400 points and here is where I get stuck. There's the obvious choice of adding another GR-75 and plonking in Gallant Haven and Rieekan but I don't want to be that guy all summer.

Dodonna is my top choice for commander as he leaves me a lot of room and is functional in just about any list. The same could be said about Raddus. Sato is certainly the commander everyone seems to be excited exploit with Wave 7 but I don't think what we have so far really leverages his strengths. Garm is... I have no idea how to use Garm and whether he even fits into what I have. Lastly, I think Madine could be fun but would really only assist whatever ship is the last piece of this puzzle. I'm not really considering any other commanders.

As for that last pieces, I'm thinking at least one more GR-75:

  • GR-75 Medium (18)
    • Comms Net (2)
      • Total: 20

...which leaves us at 285/400 points (115) and something else:

  • Landonition? Too meta-y for casual play I think
  • A pair of TFA Hammerheads?
  • A basically naked MC-75?
  • A Pelta with... what the **** do you even put on a Pelta?
  • A pair of TRC90's?

Your opinions are greatly desired.

I run a similar list, Yavaris, 2 Flotillas as you have them and Rieekan on an MC80C tooled up with boosted, ECM and more FCTs to move B-wings around. I don't have quite the fighter force you do loosing 10 points or so and no Toryn.

I used to like Rieekan for the fighter survival (Zombie Wedge) but since BT Avenger came along I love him for plonking flotillas or Yavaris in front of an angry ISD and keeping it alive no matter what. 2 turns of 2 B-Wings and Gold Squadron double tapping can easily deal with any big ship.

I have often swapped to Dodonna for a slightly tougher fighter build (upgrade to Ten Numb) and Defiance or QBTs on the flagship. Boosted comms on my MC80C is invaluable for this build. Yavaris has to stay close to the action and often dies (but Rieekan can get you one last set of double taps). Flotillas also have to stay close but are protected by the large target on Yavaris' T-shirt. The flagship however can shoot and run for it while stiff arming large enemies with fighters and Zombie small ships. Boosted coms lets it still activate fighters as the battle moves away and smaller ships die.

If you come up against a strong squadron player such as a tooled up Sloan Ace build your ships will actually have to kill something and Yav + 3 flotillas isn't going to do much. Non of your 115 point options seem to fill that role. MC80S with GTs, LS and Mon Karren could be fun or drop a flotilla and take something bigger like MC75 with 2 ordnance slots, ECM and OE or a decent MC30 + TRC90.
