Ranging with RAClo

By sirjorj, in X-Wing

I am playing in a regional this weekend and was planning on a Norra/Lowhhrick/Fenn squad but I made the mistake of listening to the Mynocks today. :) I say mistake because now I want to give RAClo a try. I put together a RAClo squad with the Inquisitor as the ace. In doing a little testing, I noticed something that I would like to verify. I am flying RAC with PTL. After I move, I can range check enemies to see if they are within range 3 to potentially show them some dark side. While doing the range 3 check, I can also subtly do the range 2 check to see if RACs ability fires, right? This way, if I'm still outside of range 3, I can PTL boost to get in closer. Is this one of those "technically, it's legal - just don't be too obvious about it" cheats?

Perfectly legal and a way to gain information that the pros use. Same thing with flight assist astromech. Even if you know you are in arc, you still check for more information and range.

It's no different than trying to Target lock a ship you *know* is out of range to get information on one that you think is close.

Same as using your range 3 template during setup to make sure your ship is within Range 1 while you just so happen to see if you’re gonnna miss that rock in front of you.

that's illegal

"Players cannot measure distance and spacing with physical objects during setup except when using range rulers and maneuver templates within Range 1 of that player’s edge."

I don't think the tournament regulations allow the last one. You have to keep your templates within range 1 of the edge. I’ve never seen anyone care, though.

Oh... a lot of local players have always done that and nobody has ever called me out on it at a tournament.

Yeah, but isn't there still that kerfuffle in the core rules where your meant to pick sides after the rocks are placed, I'm pretty sure the sort of "player code" we've got going on is sorta taking precedence over the odd rule here and there

I remember the first time someone wanted to enforce that. Everyone just looked at him sideways. But I let him because it is technically in the rules.

I guess I’ll stop the “lining up” technique. It’s mostly just for assurance, and I’m not very good anyways. But I don’t want to be “that guy” or run into “that other guy.”

Actually, tournament rules have different set-up rules. I should know - I asked the exact same question!

I know your not asking for list advice but I would highly recommend not using ptl on rac, because he doesn’t have very good greens and a good opponent will predict your movements way easier and catch rac, which usually turns out very bad

but yes it’s a legal move, And don’t feel ashamed it’s a perfectly respectful to gain all the information you can from a legal move

The only time I'd take PTL on RAC would be to PTL Boost from Ysanne Isard's Evade action, in the Combat Phase .

That - is glorious.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I’ve been thinking about this and will probably end up playing my rebel squad. Either way, I appreciate the suggestion.

Given that you'd probably use Push the Limit for a target lock a lot of the time, Predator does pretty close to the same thing. You can't use it to Kylo+Boost, but you'll also have a full-white dial to work with.

Plus if you damaged cockpit a ship with Kylo, Predator is now re-rolling 2 dice.

You know, I never really thought about that interaction.

I ran a stressy RAC once when I was trying to use Expose with Experimental Interface. The limits to mobility are quite profound. I ended up running him off the board due to an ionization. That probably could have been avoided if I were more willing to do the hard white turns.

From what I have read...go predator. Why the heck not?

RacLo is still a really good option right now, ptl is just the wrong tech. I flew rac a lot before kylo and after, and you basically only kylo if you need to, if your not dodging arc or creating favorable engagements, blind them, if they have higher ps, drop them to 0.

Predator is great right now

vi is classic but I think ps is less important with all of these 11s

trick shot is actually pretty awesome because you get more points to play with and your gonna have obstructed shots all the time

Oh, I am not doubting the effectiveness of RAClo, I just have more experience with the rebel squad style of play and don't have enough time to come up to speed on the RAClo-style.
