Insane Yorrick Round - Very Minor Spoilers

By KrisWall, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

To avoid general spoilers, let's just say that my friends and I were playing a late Carcosa scenario and came upon an enemy with 20 health. That enemy was blocking our escape and we were in pretty grim shape. Did I mention that he did 2 damage and 2 horror with his attack and had both hunter and retaliate?

What follows is basically a best case scenario/stars align in our favors kind of thing.

I'm playing William Yorrick with a Leather Coat, a Machete, a Police Badge and a pile of resources in play. I have two Flares and a level 2 Vicious Blow in hand. One of the other players, Daisy Walker, has two Old Books of Lore in play. She goes first, activating both for me. I pull a second level 2 Vicious Blow and... Will to Survive! We hatch a plan. Everyone moves back one location except for me. I stand in the path of the beast.

It moves in, dealing enough damage to cause me to discard my Leather Coat and leaving me at one sanity. Rough, but expected. We weather the Mythos phase without major problems. Police Badge really help with those Willpower checks. The following happens...

  • I play Will to Survive as a fast action. I don't have to pull chaos tokens for tests for the rest of the turn.
  • I play Flare, adding both Vicious Blows. Without needing to pull a chaos token, I succeed and deal 7 damage.
  • I play the second Flare, dealing 3 damage.
  • I attack with my Machete, dealing 2 damage.
  • I discard a Police Badge for 2 additional turns.
  • I attack with my Machete, dealing 2 damage.
  • I attack with my Machete, dealing 2 damage.

That's 18 damage total!!! Akachi moves in and hits the enemy with a level 3 Shriveling, succeeding and killing him. We earned 2xp for that kill and then successfully ended the scenario the next round.

I really thought we were going to die. I'm absolutely a believer in both Will to Survive and Police Badge now. If Yorrick keeps 3 resources on hand at all times, he can discard Police Badge for the extra items and then put it back into play (for 3 resources) whenever he kills a monster. It's basically a 3 resource + kill a monster to gain 2 free turns later on. Beautiful!

Yeah, I have been checking out the crazy stuff you can do with Yorick and think I will run him in my next campaign. The funny thing is, the combos you used didn't even have to leverage his special ability.

Police Badge, Machete and Will to Survive is high on my list. Toss in a Resourceful so you can pull the WtS from your discard back into your hand.

I have also been looking at red gloved man with him, kill a monster, play it from your discard, investigate with a 6 intellect and buy some insurance for the Mythos phase. Then repeat.

I like to take 2x Cherished Keepsakes and 2x Leather Coats. I play pretty risky, taking more damage and horror than I should. I do this because I know that killing a monster will let me effectively "heal" 2 damage or horror by putting a Cherished Keepsake or Leather Coat back into play. Throw in Relic Hunter and you can also have the Police Badges. The deck does feel pretty resource light as I'm constantly spending money to replay Police Badge.
