It's like the Olympics. Everyone gets to send someone, regardless of whether they have a realistic chance of medaling or not. It's a tournament, yet, but it's also a bigger event that is about sportsmanship, camaraderie, and celebrating the Destiny community overall. If we were talking about a random allocation of top 8 players, I can see the argument about wanting the best to compete at that level. But we're not. And chances are, the top 8 ARE going end up being top level players, who more than likely won an invitation.

I am bummed I did not get a seat at Worlds. I would have went but did not get selected.

That's not true at all. Those that go to the Olympics, MUST STILL qualify. I'm fine with countries needing to be represented. So a certain number of reserve seats are selected from countries all over, but that doesn't deter from the fact, Worlds should be consisted of the best of the best. If that means #1 from some small country that's a 20 hour flight, but would be ranked #200th in the World, that's fine. At least that person would have been #1 in their area. Otherwise, it should just be an Open Grand Prix if it's going to consist of every average joe-schmoe gets a shot.

Yeah, there are a lot of qualifying events leading up to the Olympics. Not every country has someone that has earn the right to be at that competition. So no, there aren't 100 hockey teams showing up to the Olympics - only the few that qualified for that tournament. Each different sport has it's own organization that determines how one can qualifies There are however only so many spots per country, like one hockey team per country.

FFG world does have qualifying events that you can win to reserve your spot. The funky thing is there is a lottery for all the other seats rather than have more events that allow one to qualify for worlds, which would be best. I just don't think FFG puts that kind of effort out there to organize that many events. So we get a lottery system, not people that are good, or have good camaraderie skills, just people who have way too many emails.

Some people seem to be of the opinion that worlds should just be like the 50-60 people who won national/regionals who can also afford to fly to America for a long weekend to play a card and dice game.

My point is, the Olympics is not the best of the best of the best. There are teams and athletes that don't get to go that have realistic chances of medalling, while competitors that would never place in their sport get to attend because that's how it works. Yes, the actual mechanics of how that happens are different from what FFG is doing, but the end result is the same. You get mixed body of competitors for the event.

These are still top athletes. They're not AVERAGE Joes and Janes. They MUST still qualify, which is a HUGE difference then just buying a plane ticket and showing up at the Olympics to compete. So again, you are wrong in your statement.

Might I introduce you to the 1988 Bobsled team from Jamaica?

Yes it was amazing that a bobsled team from Jamaica could even QUALIFY to be part of the Olympics. They actually had to be good. They don't have to be medal good but they can't completely suck. Although it is possible to game the system to get an invite to the Olympics such as the women's half pipe ski event this year. That loophole will be getting closed so only the best of the best get to be part of the Olympics. Just being an Olympian is huge since they are all elite and to metal is super elite.

With FFG worlds it is who created the most email addresses and got lucky. That is the complaint and it is a valid one. However, FFG worlds is not the Olympics. It's just not that kind of organization kid.

The 1988 team actually didn't have to qualify, they weren't good, and they were lucky they didn't get more injured or killed during their runs.

All of which is the point: even the Olympics, the premier sporting event on the planet, isn't 100% based on competitive entries. It's not even 100% competition, as their are non-medal exhibition events every year. So why anyone would think that a game event of this level should be any different is a bit confusing to me.

Haven't seen Cool Runnings, and I've not once referred to it. The 1988 Jamaican bobsleigh team didn't have to qualify, they had a special arrangement to compete. They've qualified normally every year they've appeared since then. But hey, being condescending is a valid argument tool, right?

If your elitist attitude is what people can expect to encounter at Worlds, I'm glad I didn't use the ticket I won in the lottery. It's a game. It's not the Olympics, and it never will be, so get over yourself.

I agree. The whole sports analogy is silly and I regret bringing it up to start with (in Association Football, still a bad analogy, I mostly just wanted to have a tongue-in-cheek dig at the English).

I stand by the idea that Worlds should only be open to people who qualify by winning other tournaments as being stupid though. Its a dice and card game, played for trinkets.

I'd rather have a huge event, many players, everyone gets together, a celebration of the community.

BeforeGame of Thrones went second edition I went to Worlds for Thrones. One day I didn't have anything else to do I played Netrunner. I don't play a lot of Netrunner, but I know the rules. I won 2 or 3 rounds and dropped after losing 2. Do you think I interfered with the integrity of Worlds?

In the early days and with the smaller games, yes. This year with x-wing, no. I am sure the netrunner people were just glad to have someone to play with.

Not really that far off, necessarily. Qualifying for the Olympics can be gamed, too, by average Joes (or Janes in this case) with some cash to burn.
