Destiny Community Reaction To World's Sign Ups

By AlexW, in Star Wars: Destiny

I was just curious as to how the Destiny community was handling the result of World's sign-ups? I've noted that most of the other FFG SW games communities are pretty frustrated (more so even than previous Worlds' signups, which had their own problems). I haven't seen as much from the Destiny community, but this could be because I'm not looking in the right places, or maybe it's something else. Did most Destiny players who wanted to get into World's get in, or is it because it's one of the newer games and players of Destiny don't have as much to compare it to?

Edited by AlexW

1) Did not qualify to get it paid for

2) Did not know sign-ups were open

3) Did not want to travel that far for a so called world championship.

4) Don't know how the sign up went so can't comment on the disappointment some might feel.

99% of the Destiny community I would guess.

I put in my application for world I put in for destiny, X-wing and Imperial assault. I was accepted to x-wing and IA and was not selected for destiny. I will not be going to world to watch people play the one game I really wanted play so I am not happy with the way they did it this year maybe next year.

To FFG's credit they did split up their worlds comp to make more room. Also, no matter how big, there is only so many seats and only so many that can be managed. If you want a ticket to worlds, win a regional. Seems pretty straight forward to me. They should have more qualifier events so people have more opportunities to go to worlds and only let people in who qualified.

Thanks for the response but that wasn't really what I was asking. I am wondering why it seems like the Destiny crowd is less frustrated (or less vocal about it) than the other communities. If your response is, "They're fine with the conditions" then I guess that is one response. But I think that most opinions I've seen on the matter think it is clear this is a big backwards step in every aspect (much larger percentage of people not getting in, no way to prioritize an event, and likely very watered down competition due to the two previous items) for a system that had been getting better each year. So, again, I'm wondering why the Destiny community hasn't been as vocal about it and what the reason is for that or if I've just missed it.

Well, Destiny is still a much smaller crowd than X-Wing, so fewer voices to speak out. They may also be able to accommodate most that wanted to go. Destiny takes less space and time than X-Wing and fewer players, so they should have been more accommodating for this game.

Last year worlds was purely whoever clicked at the right time to register. This year there is a tonne of people that have earnt their spot through winning tournaments.

Doesn't seem like there is a lot of reason to complain.

That makes sense. I didn't realize that Destiny was smaller than X-wing as I thought it was comparable. It's a good point that it takes less space and is easier to accommodate more players, which could account for the reason smaller games (like Armada and Imperial Assault) are more frustrated.

I hadn't thought about the fact that is this is actually a kind of improvement for Destiny in that there was no reserved tickets last year whereas for other games this year seems to see a much larger pool of top players not getting in (even though there are reserved spots). That makes a lot of sense and is a great point. Thanks.

I applied for a Destiny seat at Worlds. I was not selected for a seat. I very much wanted to participate and was disappointed I did not get a seat. I am 100% fine with how the process was implemented. They have to parse out limited seating somehow, and a random lottery seems entirely fair.

I'm disappointed because I didn't know sign-ups had been done. This is the first year I could go, and I have friends that were accepted for Destiny.

I think an event like worlds should be a invitation only to those that have won a place though a premier event as it should be a headline of those people playing at the top of their level, not an event filled up with anyone that just happens to buy a ticket... make worlds special not just another normal everyday event

I disagree.

The current system rewards premier event winners by guaranteeing them a seat, but i want to see a huge event with participants from across the spectrum of players, not just the best 30-40 players.

Think of it like the soccer world cup - its not just for Germany to flex our footballing dominance against Brazil and Spain; England gets to play too.

Hmmm... Well said, Stu.

But I'll assume you're talking men's soccer, and NOT women's.

Oh... ;)

If they qualify.

Is soccer even a real sport though?

Not as much as Rugby or Ice Hockey, more than Cricket or Baseball.

Soccer is for children, so yes, it is a real kid's sport.

I'm just upset I didn't apply with more than one email address. Apparently this worked! I'm so dumb.

This year's method is a lot better than last year's method. However it is still flawed. There are a lot of great, top X-Wing players that didn't get into Worlds this year. How can it be Worlds when top players aren't there? Sure there will be some that got reserved seats, but in the end, most (not all) of the Worlds tickets should be earned. In order for it to be the cream-of-the-crop then all the top players (from all over the World) should be represented, not just a handful.

In the end, more top 4-32 (minimal) at Store Championships (winner), Galactic Qualifiers (top 4), Regionals (top 8), Nationals (top 16), & Continentals (top 32) should get auto invites. And if someone already has earned, it gets passed down at that event.

There should also be a point system where folks who travel to multiple large events and do pretty good just might not make top table every time, should earn a spot too.

A point system would be great but I fear FFG just isn't organized enough to do that.

They were supposed to be hiring some MtG 3rd party vendor to do this...but they fail/are slow on everything.

The announcement is always so insignificant.

Yeaaaaah. I was concerned about this. Will we need to work with a scalper in the future?

The debate that 'only those who win a spot deserve to go' has more sides:

  • I used to live near multiple Regional Championships. Now I don't live near any. Should I need to take time off, drive and rent a room so I can participate at Worlds?
  • What if I live in a country where there are a only a handful, if any, qualifying championships?
  • Should I also need to qualify to get into smaller championships? I play L5R, should I need to win a store championship to get into the PAX Unplugged Kotei Championship, and thereby might be able to get to Worlds?

I get that it's Worlds, but there are few sports where the best make it all the way to the highest level of play. This one requires most people to travel cross country - or farther - to participate. It also requires an obligation at a time not chosen by the participants. It is unreasonable to assume that everyone that "should" be there, can and will be if given the chance.

I feel that a lottery system is as fair system as it can be. Until people use multiple email addresses.

As far a being able to prioritize, how are you envisioning that working?

  • If Adam signs up for only one event and Billy signs up for 2, should one of them get greater priority?
    • What if Billy prioritizes?
  • Suppose that Billy prioritizes Destiny over X-Wing, but only wins the X-Wing ticket.
    • Should the system remove him from X-Wing because it's not his priority?
    • Should he be able to switch his X-Wing ticket for a Destiny one?
      • If so, who has to loose their Destiny ticket for Billy get one?

Ummm...what sport do you play that the best don't make it? Are you part of the invisible air soccer ball or everyone should get a trophy? I don't think you are.

Again, they can just call it Open Invitations if it's not going to be the Best-of-the-Best for Worlds.

In Basketball, Football, Baseball, the two best teams almost never make it to the final round. Take the 1980 Olympic Men's Hockey: Russia and the US were the 2 best teams in that set. Russia didn't make the gold medal game, as they were knocked out by the US. Yes, the best teams usually do make it into the playoffs, assuming that there aren't divisions. In the NBA, one conference often has teams that, if they were in their rival conference, would advance on points. Two Playoffs ago, the Huston Rockets (41-41) advanced into the playoffs in the West, while the Chicago Bulls (42-40) had a better record but were unable to advance because they were 9th best (the cut being top 8) in the East.

Second rebuttal. I am not a "part of the invisible air soccer ball".

Third. Regional champions are given reserved access to Worlds. By the reasoning of the best-of-the-best, they have full opportunity to attend and compete. As you proposed it, would them changing the name of the event pacify you?
